Some continental Eurofag input here, a "cassette" in many European countries just means "encased" (that's the origin of the word), the "tape" cassette is what most commonly just referred to as a "cassette" today but a "game cassette" was also used for NES (and etc) cartridges at times in lieu of "cartridges".

Might be a burgerfag thing, but I at least have never heard game cartridges referred to as "tapes", that's just plain ignorant.

However, on my former PAL rental games, most of them have a sticker saying "RENTAL CASSETTE".

We just called them "games" as in "pop out the game and blow in it and pop it back in".
We read the manuals so if it got more technical we'd say "cartridge" and later "gamepak" because that became the manual term later.

while /we/ know the game contains no tape so shouldn't be simplified to tape, you can't actually see inside most carts...

I grew up in a medium-sized city and my parents called NES games "tapes" at some point, because to them, NES games and VHS cassettes were things you rented to stick in your appliance and (like the other anon said) make the TV fun. They weren't especially stupid people but they also weren't very mechanically minded. Also, they didn't care much about video games or any other kind of computing technology, so they didn't put much thought into it. I don't think they really believed there was tape in there. I think they just grabbed for the word that felt appropriate and failed to notice that it MIGHT not be (they couldn't notice that it WASN'T appropriate because they didn't even actually know whether or not there was tape in there; they would have had to cut one open or ask somebody more knowledgable to find that out, and to do any of that they would have had to give a crap about the matter in the first place).

It's like calling all movies "films" even though some of them are shot with digital equipment and no film. It's just a carry-over that hardly anybody minds because the original word had already lost most of its original, literal meaning by the time the new medium first became popular.

In Finland video game cartridges are very commonly just called "kasetti" which directly translates to tape, its term we used back then and still use. >just called "kasetti" which directly translates to tape
considering how similar kasetti and cassette are, i'm not so sure it translates to tape
keep in mind that "tape" isn't short for "cassette tape", except in specific contexts where you're already talking about cassette tapes (where both "cassette" or "tape" is enough)
while it's not common in english to refer to anything but a tape-based medium as a cassette, it's technically not specific to tape, so even in english it is valid to call a game cartridge a cassette (though nobody is likely to understand it just due to convention)
