Devs have abandoned it as a concept altogether, it seems, but there's still a few cool maps out there. Not retro, but pic related was pretty comfy (clearly inspired by SMB3), and I also kinda liked what they did with the islands in Shantae and the Pirate's Curse.

This game blew my mind as a kid when the SNES first came out, still one of my all time favorite games til this day and got that special "early SNES" game (LttP, Act Raiser, Soulblazer etc) vibe magic.

Came to post this. How did this simple map gave so much wonder feeling to my kid self? (Monkey island itself felt like bigger than it was. Simply learning about lechuck's deeds at the scumm bar made the game much wider than its usual for a point and click)

The time it takes for the little pixel to travel from location to location really added to the immersion. If something was far away you maybe wanted to "stop off" at a half-way location first, rather than just teleporting there. The paths between each location looked lonely and isolated. Excellent.
