Last year, I supported him on Patreon at the lowest level to get access to his updates but stopped a couple months later after I started getting the grifter vibe from him as there was very little evidence that he was putting much work into the project. Suddenly, after all these years, he manages to finish it within months of new competitors entering the market? I call bullshit.

The Phantom works perfect, has no issues like the Kai as far as I know but since buying an Action Replay is almost mandatory is you're gonna actually use your Saturn, kai is free.
You're not gonna break the laser of any cd/dvd or similar media reader by over using it. They're all made to last like 60,000 hours of constant use. Even if that number got reduced to 6000 hours, you won't use your Saturn for that long.
The laser will probably die for other reasons before it dies from over use.
Buy good quality cds, they're cheap. Just google what brands to buy.

Taiyo Yudens work fine. I got mine off Ebay and they work perfectly depending on the condition of your laser. That or Sony or JVC branded if you can still find them. Don't worry too much about pedantic fucks who say X doesn't make good quality CD's anymore or Y is owned by X blah blah blah. Use conventional brands and burn at the lowest speed you can and everything should be fine.

On top of that, people had good reason to assume it would not be priced at the top of the market. His entire R&D phase was funded even though he was working on it in his spare time as a hobby. This is why even his diehard supporters were shocked at the price announcement.

I could be mistaken, but I do remember him saying that supporters would be able to buy the product at a discounted rate when it released. Nobody would have expected that the discount would be 6% on a product that was more expensive than anything else on the market.

He really played it beautifully when you think about it. He milked his Patreon supporters and then switched gears to "product launch" mode right as that began to dry up. Launching *after* the MODE was also beneficial. They can't even keep them stocked at $215 USD, so based on that he knew he could charge even more. My guess is he got wind of new competitors entering the market last year and decided to finally put the work in to finish. As it turned out, his timing was perfect from a profitability standpoint.

At any rate, the target audience for this product is super niche older enthusiasts, certainly old enough to hold down a solid job - it makes more sense to me to produce a premium product for a premium price.
