I have some free time and I was wondering which classic JRPG I should play, but when it comes to deciding I've been feeling overwhelmed in terms of choice. Any platform is an option.

In terms of /vr/ JRPGs I have played:
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Final Fantasy 7
Pokemon GSC
Mario RPG
Paper Mario

I was considering choosing from Xenogears, SMT1, Persona 2, Grandia, Suikoden, but am open to suggestions.

Yeah, Mother does have a problem with guiding you where to go next, aside from just talking to every NPC in every town.
Doesn't help that it's also pretty much semi non-linear when it comes to the main quest.

These PSX jrpgs are oddly interesting, they have no voice acting so much of the cringe is diminished and crazy experimental mechanics, just look at FF8, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story. It's like Square went loco

Big fans of mecha especially love Xenogears - besides the obvious reasons, there is also a stripped down Virtual-On sort of game, complete with multiplayer, as well as unlockable features and characters. It’s easily the biggest minigame in the genre.
