Not quite the last good rare game but the last great one. Dinasaur planet would have been good had they finished and Kameo passed the sniff test I guess. They cut so much from Conker too, if you watch the making of in rare replay its seems like they cut half the game. As far as linear 3d platformers go its the best of the best, cant think of anything else that really compares. Best graphics on N64 hands down. Rare showed it could do what nintendo couldn’t, put adult humor in games not to mention better graphics and how did the big M reward them again?

This, Rare were better when they were making charming games with the odd suggestive joke here and there, Conker is just disgusting projectile vomit start to finish and retroactively sullied everything they ever made, Nintendo were right to drop them after that. >> No.6727971

Eh it was ok. Nothing special, a few funny bits. Unique and fun for a playthrough. Unfunny and tryhard at worst parts. What I dont get is why people are always talking about 12 tales and how we missed out. Yeah like we needed a shitty proto banjo kazooie with a kiddie squirrel collecting acorns. At least it broke the mold, so it gets remembered. Wonderful game? Not really. Passable? Yeah

it's a great game, but even "adult" Nintendo fans would prefer bing wahoo so long gay bowser to anything with poop and guns, so they will forever long for 12 tales

>> No.6728037

I remember being so hyped to play this like 10 years ago after hearing so many good things about it, and then when I did I just thought it was just a mid-tier 3D platformer. Aside from swearing and some lame poop jokes it's not really all that interesting or good, probably one of the most overrated games on the console

>> No.6728081

>>6727998
What makes it a great game? It has some fun moments, but the second to second gameplay just feels loose and shoddy. The basic movement mechanics of Mario 64 feel really satisfying, which is why people will always go back to it, and make romhacks, just to get more of that particular gameplay. Once you've laughed at the poopoo jokes and the gore, you've kind of experienced everything Conker has to offer.

It's a fun game full of interesting setpieces before that was really a thing. I wish CBFD leaned more on its platforming roots, but what's there is still challenging if a little undercooked. I think it's more about the presentation, characters, humor, and seeing what they throw at you next. I also like the moodiness of the second half of the game which contrasts with the slapstick violence of the first half - Conker feels like a real character who changes over the course of the journey, and not in ways you expect. Conker just did a lot of things you didn't often see in games back then, let alone 3D platformers

BFD was a huge thorn in Nintendo's side, especially since it didn't sell well and cost a shit ton to market even though it was (technically) in development for 4+ years. I realize Nintendo helped to get the game to fail, but had they not changed the entire game design to "Reddiit: The Game" (contradicting not only Pocket Takes, but also DKC and references to Conker and Berry in B-K), Rare would most likely not have been sold and would have contributed greatly to the Gamecube's library, Star Fox Adventures arguably aside. Moreover, I would bet money that had Nintendo not sold their Rare share, most of the classical team would not have moved on from working there. Fucking Chris Seavor hasn't even made a game since BFD, for goodness' sake! And before BFDtards bring it up again, the multiplayer modes were already part of Twelve Tales (pic related). On the plus side, I strongly suspect Twelve Tales was finished in 1998 and that Rare still has it and will release/leak it someday, finally restoring the series canon which this released forced memeathon caused it to crash and burn.

I’d love to see twelve tales. I’ve always been on the fence, is it shitty banjo? Or did we miss a good game? Hope it gets leaked but its not likely. Man, yall really all hate bfd, I thought it was immature but a decent time, it reminded me of old south park when they were less satirical and more dancing poop. I bet 12 year olds loved it. But I played through it once ten years ago. I chuckled at a few parts, found it mildly enjoyable and then finished the game and never played it again except multiplayer a few times. Saying its great is overselling it. Definitely not worth four years of development. Best n64 graphics for what its worth. I wouldn’t call it garbage, its just aiming for low brow humour akd succeeding.

My only real complaint with CBFD is Conker's shadow. Instead of having it just be a circle that stays under him at all times like with most platformers, they wanted to be special and made it a dynamic shadow. It looks good, but it makes platforming waaaaay harder than it needs to be because you can't see where you're going to land.

>> No.6728494

>>6728462
>I’ve always been on the fence, is it shitty banjo?
According to one of the developers, it was supposed to be a "living cartoon", so it's probably somewhat like BFD regarding the cutscenes but the rest like Banjo (and possibly Zelda, since it seems you can change tools and equipment; Berry's gameplay was supposed to be something of an RTS). Pocket Tales seems to be a scaled down version of what Twelve Tales was.

I have no issue that you guys like BFD or find it funny and have great memories from it, by the way. I just genuinely believe it both ruined Rare and destroyed a great game from being released and sequels to come of it, as well.

Rare was still going strong years after BFD released. Nintendo was never going to purchase Rare outright. Most ex-Rare staff cite Microsoft overreach as the reason they left. The corporate structure at Rare fell apart after Microsoft implemented a new chain of command and the Stampers left. It didn't have anything to do with BFD or Twelve Tales.

I’m not the guy you replied to but I think Conker might have been the end of “good” rare. They were going strong with what? Half finished bastardized stardox adventures? Dont get me wrong parts of it are good but they didnt finish. Grabbed by the ghoulies? They lost money on that and its repetitive af. Perfect dark zero was objectively poop, wasn’t it? Kameo was ok. I guess people liked those fkn pinata dancing sex garden games. Kinect? Nuts and bolts? Am I missing a big one? Which one of those was “going strong” a la goldeneye, banjo 1 and 2, dkc 1 abd 2, killer instinct, perfect dark, conker etc.?

Pay attention to what I said. The company was going strong financially but Microsoft hamstrung their development efforts by restructuring the whole company. I'm not arguing the quality of their games didn't go off a cliff after the buyout, although Star Fox Adventures is pretty underrated imo. Dino Planet would have been better, but they were still turning out quality games up until PD Zero

And you would be wrong. Nintendo supported BFD, they even gave it a big presence at E3 and its own ad campaign in Playboy. Retailers were the ones who abandoned the game post-release. Rare made enough money for Nintendo that an underperformer wouldn't (and didn't) affect their partnership. Rare went on to develop GBA and DS games for years

No way of knowing. Maybe Chris Seavor wouldn't be utterly embarassed by the series if it was just another funny animal platformer but he'd probably still be disinterested in revisiting it. I don't know if Rare would have been bought by Nintendo or not had they not published such a filthy game for their console, but if they were, maybe they would still be in a state that at least somewhat resembles the glory days. Sure they took a dip in quality around the gamecube era but maybe they could have recovered had they not been swept under the rug doing shitty kinect junk after they couldn't find footing on the Xbox. There's a lot of variables. For all we know it could be exactly the same, but Conker was more friendly and that's it.

Technically started with Diddy Kong Racing, mate, and Pocket Tales is the same character featured in DKR and also in Banjo-Kazooie. Bad Fur Day is supposed to be a parody of Twelve Tales and the short lived but actually existent Conker series, regardless of your goalpost moving.

Conker was full of cool ideas which were poorly executed half of the time. Some chapters expected you to do mindbogglingly retarded stuff, such as pissing on the boulder guys in the nightclub. I ended up using cheats to skip some of those shitty chapters. The vampire chapter was also trash and I remember having problems with one of the objectives there as a teenager.

It didn't help that the game was extremely linear, with nothing meaningful to discover outside of the main path.
