There is (was) much MUCH more content to go over. Much of it in antiquated or proprietary formats needing to be figured out and to be loaded on modern software. Tons of source code to look over, etc, etc. I find most of the time when people bitch and moan about the existence of a single thread like this its due to their lack of knowledge/understanding on how to navigate or understand the content.

Don't know exactly which rom that it, but with the ".v" extension, it will need to be exported though CVS to remove the header and footer data. After that you should be able to pop it in to an emulator and see.

I don't even care very much about this stuff (I got all I personally wanted, which was the ROMs for the Capcom SNES prototypes, the first day I learned about it) but I've had these threads open and have loosely kept up with them for about as long as they've been going I guess. I just find it a bit interesting. Not highly interesting, but interesting enough that I'll hit F5 a few times per day and glance over the latest screenshots or whatever. There's nothing too special about it. I was steeped in Nintendo stuff for years as a kid so now I care about it more than a person needs to.

As for the question of why this conversation needs to happen HERE - well it doesn't, but if it didn't then I wouldn't keep up with it because Discord is a noisy, chaotic medium that's only for children, and Pastebin and Google Docs aren't discussion forums. It'd be too much hassle.

I mean why isn't it enough that this is better than the reposts about the Sonic barrel? Of course it's better than those, and those are here, so... isn't that enough? protos are fascinating. looking at elements from games of your childhood, triggering specific memories you may have forgotten and sparking theories, a fragment of a feature- TOO ambitious to get in the final game. its almost like its a gateway to a parallel dimension of what things could have been. if you saw "THIS" specific beta asset, in a completed form would it have given you the same fond memory as the retail used version? less so? more?

the only ambitous beta restoration project that comes to mind is the resident evil 1.5 one in which theyre trying to complete a 40% finished build prototype (keep in mind the game was cancelled at 80%) that was in itself an entirely different game compared to the finished one. granted there is a good amount of assets from the 80% present in a later beta of re2(and not 1.5) but i dont think theres enough content to make a faithful full game. a few years ago it went into silence to avoid attention from capcom so it may have been canned anyway. theres a facebook page showing the work they did on it though

The missing "bgandpcr" file has been commented out and VARS.INC has the contest build option set to 0. I figured it can't hurt to have a working package for this too. You can change the language it builds to to French or German in VARS.INC which is neat. Setting CES Demo mode changes the intro text and activates a 4 minute onscreen timer, nothing too exciting. I couldn't get the first debug option to compile, not sure what's up with that. The second debug option "stage selection/ speed up mode" doesn't seem to do anything, I excpected it to allow you to select any level from the map screen, but no such luck. Still, having the original source code and being able to build a working rom from it is quite exciting for me.

The stories of Mario and Zelda titles have always been supplemental to the actual gameplay. Action games only have stories attached to make the experience more interesting. Itoi is the one that writes the story, and I just help out a bit.

You sure? It's a walkway for the forest temple. I'm fairly certain it's final game, as the rest of the files in that certain dungeon variation look very similar, if not exactly similar, to final. You might be tripped up about the pixelated texture on the wall. That's just the result of the tool, I think.

The difficulty curve absolutely is fucked. I don't know how far you are now, but fair warning: it spikes like crazy after the second palace, when you are expected to get through Death Mountain. If you keep playing up to that part, I'd say don't hesitate to look up a guide to navigate those caves (if you get good at killing orange Dairas though, it can be useful for exp grinding). The overworld won't be that challenging again until you make your way to the last Palace.

so, i got mario's beta sound effects in, but due to nintendo being weird and fluctuating the pitch of mario's voice in sm64, it comes out weird.
so, i need to sacrifice a sound byte.
my options are:
keep the "HOO!" sound normal, but the con is that it changes the "HOOAH!" sound to more of a "UAH!":
