The virgin Kaze Vs The Chad Kruko
KAZE:
>the few things he made that runs on an N64 still run like shit
>just plops Mario into a 1:1 Hyrule recreation
>Has a dumb meme sense of humor
>Constantly stomped by Nintendo

KURKO:
Games run near flawless on N64
Retextures and reimagines Hyrule to make the characteres look like they belong there
>Sense of humor pretty on point with the actual games
>Actual Rareware team complimented his work

Forgive my blathering, but I've just installed four android emulators with absolutely no luck. Bluestacks runs like garbage and nox, memu, and VDplayer automatically just say 'sonic 1 has stopped working' when I try to open the damned thing.
has anyone made a rom hack that comes close to the 2013 mobile versions? They're so damned tempting. I wish they didn't exist, because it's hard to just boot up the ol sega emulator knowing there's fantastic, high-quality ports out there. I'm not even a widescreenfag but the idea of seeing more of the zone at a time is appealing.

May as well post my romhack. Level and graphics hack of SMB1, very short.

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5198/

Would definitely be glad to get any feedback or even just impressions. Only one real review so far which was pretty critical, but my irl friends liked it, but they're my friends so there's a clear bias there. Would like to hear what anons think of it.

I'm also down to answer any questions people have if they want to try their hand at hacking this game, though this one hack is my only experience so I'm far from any sort of expert.

Most games have their inner coding compressed. You need to know how to de-compress and re-compress that text without fucking the whole structure. And, since japanese uses a lot less space than english, you'll probably need to find workarounds, through ASM most of the time, to show more characters in menus and stuff. You should check out RomHacking.net, since there's lot of documentation for several games. You can try working with hexadecimals and stuff on easy, documented games and go from there.

I wish somebody would remake the first two games in widescreen like that guy who remade Sonic 3, but it seems like the mobile ports have killed any interest. Android emulators suck ass and there's no two-player functionality for Tails in the Taxman port. As a result it feels like there's no definitive way to play Sonic 1 and 2

>> No.6725294

>>6724292
>japanese uses a lot less space than english
less SCREEN space due to fewer glyphs per word, but much more DATA space due to the much larger alphabet and the need for characters to be larger in order to be legible.

>> No.6725307

>>6725106
Not even just the widescreen but bug fixes, spin dash, ability to play as tails and knuckles in sonic 1... It's just too tempting to simply ignore. I'm sort of happy to hear i'm not the only one having trouble with android emulators, but it's kind of baffling that NOBODY has managed to make a good one, and that 90% of them are chinese. I know PCs are dying, but come on. it shouldn't be this hard.

The font takes up more space, but the stored script will usually take up less space. This is something translation patches usually have to struggle with.

>> No.6726407

In the overall memory, sure.

The important practical consideration for translation hackers though is character count. A certain amount of memory is set aside to print X number of characters, and while it's easy to change those characters to English ones, extending the number of characters to be printed in a dialog box can be a hell of a lot of work.

Ah sorry, in that case I cant help you. Im familiar with ROM editing but not the cheats menu.

However, it might be a worthwhile experiment to open the ROM Memory and go to address 039E and change one of those pairs to 30 to see if the result is the same as the cheat. Because you can definitely save edited ROM Memory, and it sorta looks like editing ROM data is all the cheat function is doing anyway.

>Retextures and reimagines Hyrule to make the characters look like they belong there
You could argue that for a "x character in y game" type project, it's better to make y game actually look like y game to emphasize the culture shock/tonal clash which is ostensibly part of the whole novelty of putting those two things together. It's not Mario running around in the geometry of Hyrule that's the cool part. It's Mario running around in the WORLD of Hyrule.

>> No.6741425

I don't know, Jiggies in Time would not have been nearly as good as it was if it was just a 1:1 recreation. There's just no way. I've been through the original version of Hyrule already anyway, going through the exact same thing with a different character would only make for a slightly interesting curiosity at best.

Besides that, even with the retexture and reshaping job Kurko did, there was never any doubt in my mind that it was still the world of Ocarina of Time. Hell there are even some cases where what Kurko did looks better than what was done in the original Ocarina of Time.

>> No.6741445

>>6741292
What do mechanics have to do with anything? That anon didn't even mention mechanics. And anyway Mechanics are the most important part of any game second only to level design. Hell the reason most rom hacks even exist is because the original games had such good mechanics to begin with so they want to make more use of it. The rest of the hacks usually exist to fix bad mechanics, so that should tell you something.

Hacks that are just "huh, neat art piece, not really fun and the level design doesn't really mesh with the mechanics well at all" simply have no merit besides a 2 minute youtube video.
