Older Gran Turismo games are good simulations, also enjoyed Sega GT.
Otherwise there are a lot of arcade racers like Crazy Taxi, Initial D Arcade Stage, Mario Kart, Ridge Racer, Rollcage...

a lot of the best racing games aren't retro.

im looking at my library and ridge racer 4 is the only stand out one. a lot of them are 6th gen onwards. wipeout is prob the most famous one, but even that's been superseded by BallisticNG.
jet moto and rollcage are pretty cool too.
