On one hand, he groomed Iwata, a complete outsider, as the successor instead of Nintendo of America upstarts, and in the meanwhile thwarted attempted coups by NoA to control the company (gave bigger independence to Europe, took back control of Mario Paint 64 and NST) and it all came to a head when NoA was refusing to publish NCL's attempts at an action romp AAA blockbuster (Disaster for Wii) while pushing for their own pet project, Project Hammer which was in development hell. Iwata stopped much of that, at the cost of atrophying third party relationships (Rare, ex-Argonaut, Silicon Knights, Factor 5...)

Nintendo could have been very well been another Sony of California in 2020.
Yet now their series are still very proud of their Japanese heritage, true to their origins, focused on gameplay rather than the spectacle (a trajectory that near bankrupted Squaresoft and they were never the same after that), and still relatively family friendly and free from cultural enrichment (Project Arms director can tell NoA to fuck off when they suggest removing a clown fighter because it's "ableist" and "triggering", for example)

On the other hand...

He's single handedly responsible for much of Nintendo's hardships from the late SNES generation until the end of the GBA/GC period. Major negative hardware design choices? Burnt bridges? He's often involved.

And then the 90s happened. Nintendo got lucky with the success of the famicom and NES, the moment they got some actual competition and couldn't do some of the worst monopoly practices ever seen they shit the bed HARD. Yamauchi then threw tantrums constantly, burned bridges, made their biggest rival that is still going strong to this day, killed one of his most profitable developers, continued to shrink until he stepped down.

He earned the name Hiroshima Yamauchi, his impact on Nintendo was nuclear. The difference is the actual Hiroshima recovered lmao

Then when Goldeneye was one of the best selling N64 games and they got basically no money for it, they told Rare to make their own franchise that was legally distinct enough from 007 that they could use which ended up being Perfect Dark.

About every single major Japanese console manufacturer suffered in one way or another from sabotage by their North American branches.

Sony is the most extreme example, as not only did the American California-based branch take over in a coup, they now hold humiliation rituals for Japanese third parties (fill a new separate rating board application with no defined rules at 2AM for all japanese games and hope it will get approved) and axed most of their uniquely japanese first party licenses and studios (popolocrois, wild arms, etc... had to go to the 3ds and mobile, japanese sony boss announces a bunch of family friendly games for the vita and they all get cancelled months after, etc)

Sega's case is infamous. Bernie Stolar kept Sega bleeding money for TWO years because he didn't want the Saturn, with no backup plan to keep the lights on. Even when the developers still shit working finished ready for release English versions, he rejected them, or sabotaged the releases one way or another (endless change demands for Rayearth, pulling RAM Save carts from WD once they knew they supplied them from japan because the game needed them, sitting on a finished Deep Fear build, wasting time on purpose with Grandia and Lunar until the developers were scared off -only 40% progress on localization in fucking 1998-). It leads to a situation where the dreamcast, even though it sold respectable numbers, still couldn't turn sega's fortunes over.

>> No.6720858

>>6720850
Now Nintendo... almost suffered a similar fate.
NoA refused to release the 64DD in late 1998. Only their versions of Mario Party and Zelda broke N64DD compatibility. When Ocarina of Time's release details were announced, they went out of their way to say that whatever 64DD plans the Japanese version will get, they will either include it on cartridge or never release it.

Late releases for major expensive Japanese releases ready for localization (Sin And Punishment) were cancelled.
There's that time NoA said they had a "dream team" of N64 supporters, that included zero japanese publishers. That actually upset third party support at home when they needed to win them up. The "dream team" was mismanaged as hell and went on to support the PS1.
Then there's Mario Paint 64. NoA REFUSED to let NCL interfere in the project. NCL pussied out with Mario no Photopi as their replacement, but once they got their shit together they went and cancelled the cartridge Mario Paint 64 and announce a similar project using its development assets as a 64DD project. That NoA refused then to publish.

Lots of red flags there. Once sales of Nintendo hardware in the west exceeded those of Japan enough to be the "main market", NoA started a power play to be the ones to call the shots globally. They had the gall to tell Nintendo "We refuse to release this console." before it's even out. The defanging of NoA that happened in the 2000s is Yamauchi fixing that.
Actually even Bernie Stolar commented on the situation. He said that Nintendo would be much better off and he "wished" he could try being the CEO of their american branch, but lamented that the Japanese side has "too much control".

Yamauchi, often referred to as "大魔王 ティラノ天堂" (Great Evil King Tyranotendo), tyranized the video games market with his monopolic practises, it is said that the Master System or the PC Engine didn't actually ever exist, and that they were invented time after so hide the fact that the Famicom was actually the one and only console existing in Japan.

Reminder that Yamauchi also pushed Doom and idgames on N64 because many Nintendo devs used DWANGO multiplayer on PC's, also the love for origin systems before EA backstabbed them when trip left the company, and Richard Gariott and CR went on to be Pedowood primadonas.

if Q2 and Doom 64 had received 64DD treatment, they would had been the best ports ever made to a console, beating even Sony.
