I've only played a bit of the remake, and it seems good, but I'm a sucker for seeing the "original vision". I believe that the first attempt is the one that has the most passion and soul, and I feel more of the 'magic' whilst playing it.

Yeah I've never even played the original but I know myself and I know I probably wouldn't like the cheesy crap in it. The remake is great.

Resident Evil 4 does the "cheesy and ridiculous yet somehow serious-ish horror" thing right - no bloat, no over-the-top bad production, no unappealing characters or extremely unskilled actors. Just awesome action and the occasional hilarious setpiece or quip. I dunno maybe I'd see the original game the same way. But based on the clips I've watched on YouTube, I doubt that.

I feel this way in general... but the choice of which one you personally played first trumps everything.

Also, there are good remakes and there are bad ones. This one is good. Remaking Final Fantasy 1 in a way that makes it blander (no more hard-edged sprites, no more weirdo charges-per-level magic system) is mainly a way to wash out history and hide it. That's a mid-level sort of a remake. Of course that stuff they've done to Final Fantasy 6 on phones or whatever is more on the bad end.

Resident Evil on the GameCube was polished enough to feel like it wasn't a remake of anything. It was just a good game, period. If you play some superficially tarted-up old game that still feels quite old at heart, then you're getting the worst of both worlds: the clunkiness of something old plus the bland normality of something new.
