So i was born in the late 80's, meaning the golden age of the FPS pasted me by. Serious sam, the duke, Doom guy, they were all before my time. (my introduction to FPS was Golden eye, and later TimeSplitters)

I decided to play Quake 1 for the first time the other day. I thought id be like Doom or Duke3d. I was very surprised to find it was better. I'm loving it.

Only thing is, i was having trouble getting it to run windowed. (i have since fixed that) But while i was doing that i ran into a mod called darkplaces. It's great except it fucking gives you all the weapons in a huge drop at the start of a stage, i don't know why you would do that. so i can't play that mod, it feel like cheating.

TL;DR Playing Quake for the first time, i love it, but Darkplaces mod Y U Give me all weapons at start?

True. but it will be too tempting. I guess i could always just ramp the difficulty to HARD to compensate.

press tilde (top left) and see if impluse 9 is in the text because unless someone has added that to the .ini file darkplaces shouldnt do that.

OP here, not sure is the grotto has the weapons layout like this, but this is what i am talking about. Doesn't eatter, Darkplaces looks nice, but I'm going to continue to play the OpenGL version just for that classic feel.

Serious Sam came out in fucking 2001 and someone born in the late 80s can't remember it?

Excuse me?

How did you miss those games if you're older then me?

I was born in 92, yet I had Duke 3D and Doom II for PC when I was in kindergarten. I was playing Serious Sam sometime in 2001.

Fuck that, download the Ultimate Patch.
Uses DarkPlaces and adds music, as well as some other shit.

While i'm no expert on quake mods, i run quake with DarkPlaces and get no such thing. It might be something else causing it, or a cheat option turned on.

When i was growing up PCs were expensive. My family didn't have a Personal Computer 1998, and even then we didn't get the internet until 2002. I was completely un aware of PC gaming for most of my young life.

I should say, I played doom in 1999 but was not really impressed by it, so i figured a lot of PC ames were like that and i didn't really like Adventure games. It was all consoles for me up until i got into college.

Pleb, I played Doom 2 and Quake 2 when I was 4.

>> No.670705

I think I played Quake when I was about 10 years old after my cousin showed me Doom. I loved Doom but Quake I could never get into. Since then ive played Quake III which I loved and Q4 which kinda sucked. So I want to retry Quake. Whats the best way to get it now? I dont care much for those HD textures (since they look terrible on lowpoly models) any mods with that in mind that i could get? Also any good torrents for Quake?

>> No.670737

you must have had a computer. I didn't

>> No.670768

i just went and got a torrent for Quake one and play the OpenGL version.

if you do that, remember to do this before you play. Create a shortcut to the exe and right click the short cut, then in the "target" part, type -window so the game will play in a window instead of full screen. you will also have to use this method to set the desired resolution.

as for moving the window up or down, i havent figured that out yet, so i had to hide my tool bar to see my status bar :p

>> No.670826

>Blah, blah, OpenGL version instructions.
Please don't do this. We used glquake back in the day because we didn't have anything better if we wanted to take advantage of hardware acceleration. Now we do and there is absolutely no reason to go back:
https://www.quaddicted.com/engines/software_vs_glquake

If you want authenticity then Quakespasm is the way to go as it basically just fixes the flaws of glquake so it's no longer a compromise. There are a few decent notes on configuration on the above site.

If you want crazy lighting and support for hires textures and all of that (impure!) stuff then DarkPlaces is the answer.

At some point I'll put together an autoexec.cfg with some sensible tweaks and defaults, bundle up the old re-vis'ed maps for true transparent water, and knock together a bit of a guide to getting the best out of Quake without spoiling 'muh authenticity.'

But since it's practically midnight here today will not be that day.

One tip? Add the '-fitz' flag to the end of your Quakespasm shortcut to maintain the old menu and console assets and the old demo loop.

XS4ALL is more than one server. If you drop into duel server you're fucked but deathmatch is just good old fashioned fragfest, you don't have to be 1337 quaker to blow someone up with 'nades when there's like 8 people online at any given time.

>> No.672226

>>670535
I don't get it, you can get those things now easily. You can download games so just get Mame and play it.

I think that some people make too big a deal of the 'environment' in which you play. Just because it's not as actively played doesn't mean that it's worse.

>(my introduction to FPS was Golden eye, and later TimeSplitters)
That was during the end middle of the golden age.
Also how did Serious Sam pass you by when it released four years after you were introduced to goldeneye.
Duke was released, two years earlier and still had quite a following. Quake, started a year earlier, picked up more in 98-99 and metamorphed early 2000s into a scene of the most beastly players around where everyone was running the tricks.
Q3 came out in 99 and lasted a few years.
UT2k4 came out in 2K4, painkiller the same.
If anything you were four years ahead of the earliest of them and you could still fucking play them just fine at the time mostly. You didn't miss it, you avoided it.

> I was very surprised to find it was better. I'm loving it.
You haven't even played it yet if it's your first time the other day. Not even close.
