What's the best retro controller? For me, it's the NES controller.

If you're a hardcore gamer and have multiple hour long sessions the sharp corners start to get uncomfortable after a while. I like the Neo Geo CD pad with the clicky thumb stick, the Japanese Saturn pad (white one) and the GameCube controller best.

Genesis 6-button, Jap Saturn, Hori N64 Mini Pad, NES bone, and SNES controllers are all good-to-great. There's also one version of the original PS1 controller--might be JP only (I only have one) that has a surprisingly good d-pad; the rest of my PS1 controllers all have shit d-pads

Any of ASCII's controllers? Pic related was only sold in Japan, but there are other non-analog controllers by them with the same dpad.

logical evolution of the snes pad and honestly amazing. i'm biased cause i grew up with it but there's a reason sony stuck with it for 3 gens

>> No.6700065

>>6699996
Really? First time I've ever heard that. It's a lot more comfortable than the angular NES controller that's for sure.

>> No.6700072

>>6700008
It's pretty much a blatant copy (except for the shitty d-pad). All they did was add another set of shoulder buttons and some handles.

The analogue sticks came later after the N64 came out and popularised analogue controls, Sony just added a second stick in place of the C-Buttons.

>> No.6700073

>>6700065
Yes, absolutely. Think about the orientation of your thumb, you can't "hover" over a button and strike it with the hinge of your thumb, while pressing the other with the tip. In order to hinge on both you need to sandwich your thumb between the buttons. It's clearly meant to emulate the SNES style to an extent, but the angle is wrong. On the SNES it's far easier to rest on B/Y, and the buttons are even designed to accomodate this, with A/B being concave and X/Y being convex, comfortable resting against your thumb.

Which came out after the Saturn analog joystick controller. Don't act like Nintendo invented the concept. As I said, I grew up with it and am biased. The d-pad is perfectly good, though the default Nintendo d-pad is better.

I think you might need more hands on time with the controller then. It's the issue people usually have with the controller.

>>6700083
I'm personally fond of the sense of depth on the PS1 pad. It's like a middle ground between saturn (very deep) and nintendo (shallow)

Personally I'd say the PS1 controllers are my favourite. I suppose PS2 are slightly better but I don't like the pressure-sensitive buttons, I prefer clicky/responsive ones.

I just bought 2x 8Bitdo SF30 PRO Bluetooth controllers for all my PC gaming (emulation etc) - did I done goofed or done good?

I don't care about the SNES style at all and would prefer the handles like on psx+ controllers.

they're fine so long as you open them up and replace the included dpad circle.

Nintendo had no idea what the fuck they needed to do to make a controller that could play fully 3D games, but I really like the shape of the grips and how the analog stick is at the exact center above the middle grip, instead of offset in some way like every other controller. The Z button being directly under the grip where your fingers naturally rest instead of at the back and top of the controller like the L and R buttons was great too. The middle grip always felt really nice to hold to me, it's a really pleasant joystick to use.

I really wish even a single other controller had ergonomics like this, the closest thing is the fucking Wii nunchuck but that's literally just half a controller where the other half is a rectangle. Every third party N64 controller replacement just does some madkatz shit or just makes it a gamecube controller and it sucks.

pretty much any one, like the other thread says 8bitdo for some god forsaken reason made the dpad sharp edges underneath.
Literally any Aliexpress knock off would fix the problem.

>> No.6704603

I mean wait for your controllers to arrive first so you can at least test and see if you have the issue.
It's widespread but there's always the chance they realized how fucked their design was and fixed it.

>> No.6704615

>>6704603
That's exactly what I'm thinking. Hopefully! Clicky d-pads probably isn't going to bother me as much as the more heavily autistic people here anyway.

>> No.6704628

>>6704615
it's not a click, it's a scrape like the other post said.
sharp plastic on plastic everytime you press right dpad.
I saw some people "fixed" it by sanding it down or rotating it in the housing, but if you have the issue it's probably easiest to just pop in a different SNES dpad as the controllers luckily use the same size for buttons as the original SNES controller.

Okay thanks. I'll try to fix before replacing.
