FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF *RETRO* PS1 GAMES..
Is the PS3 a good choice? You get a crisp HDMI out image with optional optical audio via TOSLINK, ability to use a wireless but still 1:1 controller, or use the original PS1 controllers though an adapter and it runs legit disks as well as burned disks and both official/pirated isos if you know what you're doing.
The emulation is second only to mednafen in synthetic tests and has 99.9% compatibility.
I can't see a downside honestly. The smoothing option even blends dither patterns nicely without any excessive blurring. It also handles 240p->480i switching instantly.

Silnt Hill 1 disc plays on my PS3 (model 2) but when you try to save the sound cuts off. Plays fine on native console and even on PS2. I don't know what other PS games will mess up like this.

Play them on their native. It's the only way.

No. A good test game to try out is Castlevania Symphony. Just try it on a ps1, ps2, then any ps3. The ps1 is a specific level of crisp and I would argue the ps2 isn't any different with the same SCART or something like HDretrovision cables. ps3 is blurry no matter the output. This is in simple terms. The ps3 is incredibly mediocre as a ps1 and ps2 if your goal is for the games to look their best.

Also the PS3 has several internal emulators, you can choose the non blurred one with cfw.

I have PS3 as my emulation rig.
As long as you get the first model you should be fine, the one on the far left in your pic.
It can run most games even SNES, N64 need some messing around with but the few titles I played were playable.
As for PS1/PS2, it was fine really.
Didn't notice any issues.
Also I've set up my TV to 720p.
as for what >>6698945 anon said, it CAN be done, But I wouldn't recommend it, since there's not really noticeable difference.
I think CFW added support for custom upscales options.
Alternatively just use the analog output of the PS3.

If you have a crt just use a playstation 2.
For the sake of having fewer systems shitting up the place its a good workaround.
Dont listen to lag memers. They just want to enjoy the supposed superiority of having big rom sets and pc monitors.

Not true, it's quasi-emulated. The PS3 has the original PS1 CPU, but everything else is emulated. It runs reasonably well, the biggest issue aside from one-off glitches is that the video is a little softer compared to the PS1. For someone with limited space who just wants a simple way to get HDMI out and a reasonably accurate experience, PS3 is fine.

I just don't get it. I guess I got 2 of those second hand, so who knows what they've been through. The 3900x or 5000x are your best bets.
3900x's are generally the most reliable, and have the best laser for reading games on DVD, which is most PS2 games. 5000x's are way quieter, may have an easier time with CDs, and has an IR blaster and better DVD-video playback features, if that's something you care about.

Is the reliability of the PS2 really so much an issue that you have to get a specific model? It's the only console (aside form the 360) that gave me problems. I have 3 and they all can't play PS1 games, some can't even play PS2 games.

I'm just worried about digging through flea markets or overpaying on ebay again just to get fucked. I got my second hand PS2s for $15 at a flea market and $35 on ebay. I just glanced at ebay and now they're going for +$60, some up in the 100s. For the most sold console in history. This scalping shit is getting out of hand. This is why I'm considering getting a PS1. They're cheap as dirt and I have never seen one break. Either that or just going to a retro game shop and getting it fixed. I already botched fixing a 360 (and potentially one of the PS2s trying to revive it).

I just want to play Vagrant Story god damnit.

They generally got better later on. The Slims supposedly have very little issues, but you lose the ability to use an HDD in those (earliest ones can be hardware modded to accept them, but that's another step you'd have to go through) and the PS1 compatibility isn't as good.

You do actually have to be careful with PS1s as well. Early units will more than likely have issues reading games. You may have to tip them on their side, or even upside down, or hell, may not play at all. Systems manufactured from 1998 or later should be mostly fine, though.

That may actually be an issue with the motherboard, rather than the slot itself. I have a PS1 with a similar issue, and swapping the entire part didn't fix it either.
I have three 39001s that all work fine for the most part. One of them has non-functional LEDs, which is supposedly due to blown fuse somewhere on the board, but I've been too lazy to bother repairing something that's mostly cosmetic.
