You'd have to be both a serious sports fan who remembered that era and recognized players and a serious retro games fan who would overlook the more primitive simulation. I watch racing and like cars generally so it's kinda fun to play Test Drive or one of the early Need For Speed games and see the cars that are either collectible classics or considered outdated trash now back when they were they were the newest and best. Maybe there are racetracks that have since been changed or closed, or references to technology that didn't become as widespread as expected. Some of your more storied examples like Group B rally cars have been recreated in modern sims so it's more little details and remembering the era as a whole package, like if you know 90s sportbikes and know the real life counterpart for all the bikes in Road Rash

Also, we can discuss homebrew, that includes games that could be made in 2020. As long as they run on retro systems, it's /vr/.

to answer your question seriously, retro sport games are usually meh or decent. They're nothing special or memorable and they come out every single year. To tell you the truth, they're more suited to normalfags and don't feel so retro because there still exists annual EA sports games to this day.
