I don't find Zelda 2 particularly enjoyable or remarkable. It's hard to an unfun degree and the moment-to-moment gameplay isn't really that well thought out. Can someone explain to me why 80s boomers praise this game to high heavens? I was born in '94 and I much prefer LttP or even Zelda 1. There's a reason sidescrolling Zeldas never took off.

Zelda 2 starts out too hard honestly, lots of things take too many hits and kill you too fast when your stats are so low. Just trudge a long and keep playing it until you get your skills up a bit and get some more moves. Honestly maybe even grind a little bit in the early game while level ups still come cheap. If you aren't having fun by the time you've found the down stab and are one shotting early game enemies THEN you can say you got filtered by this game.

Unironically my favorite one. It has the best soundtrack bar fucking none, and it's actually challenging unlike the cakewalk that was the first game. I know this is bait but if you think this is hard, stay far away from any Castlevania.

Actual reasons Zelda 2 is considered a bad game
1. The enemies give fuck all for exp (outside of the bubble which I didn't even realize gave exp until I broke down and looked up spots to grind exp
2. When you die you go back to zelda's room rather than the palace you where just inside. This was fine in Zelda 1 because the overworld was small enough that if you knew where you where going it was easy to avoid enemys and get right back to it.
3. Some of the palaces have layouts that make you wan't to scalp whoever was the architect for them (this is somewhat midigated by the fact that in the actual 1980's people probably drew more maps than we do now adays)
Outside of these elements Zelda 2 is a mostly fine game I mean if your playing retro games and you don't talk to everybody in town and miss clues and hints thats your fault.

I was a kid in the 80s and I loved this game. But my standards were crude and still forming. I think that if I played it for the first time now I'd probably like it, but not enough to ever play through it again. I think it's a good game. I think it's unusually good compared to what was available to me personally when it was released. I don't go around praising it loudly. It's not hard by the way. Consider a different hobby.

i got to the last palace but it was too big and with lots of branches, with no idea which one to explore first. So I left it there.

We don't. It was a pretty fun game for a little while, and then the novelty wore off and everyone just wanted another top-down game. As you said yourself, there's a reason sidescrolling Zelda didn't take off.

It did really well sales wise, though. I've always taken this as a matter of "you play what you have" which really was the reality for us. And really, I don't think anyone actually disliked it. Certainly no one "praises it to high heavens" or anything, at least not people who aren't children on 4chan trying to bait, but it was fairly well received. It's just really easy to look back and see how it clearly doesn't fit in with the entirety of the Zelda franchise, and I think young people take that as a reason to give it a "black sheep" label that it never really had (or has).

Not to knock the first Zelda game but I was never able to beat it without cheating. I couldn't get past the rooms full of darknuts you see halfway through the game. I have on several occasions beaten Zelda II without cheating. It's not easy, but honestly the first game is more challenging for me at least. I like Zelda II it was the first zelda game I owned. I remember being frustrated at one point that other zelda games weren't like it which is funny in retrospect. I understand the hate it gets but it deserves better desu. I most baffling thing about it that nobody ever addresses is that the Zelda you rescue in this game is not the same person from the first game, meaning that there are two Princess Zeldas in the game.

i had the gold cart as a kid
i was trading pokemon cards for "cheap games"

i had zelda 2, and final fantasy


i apparently used to completely suck at nes games as im replaying through a modified zelda2 cart so the save battery is easier to replace.

the magic system and level system is very different from the first game

but overall id say its enjoyable but i doubt i'll give it a second playthrough

the music being a fresh experience and the endearing spritework keep us in it

i have shit taste though anon
& got pretty far in FF1 as well

also beat and enjoyed quake, doom, and spinmaster


zelda 2 requires patience bc you WILL die and have to walk your ass all the way back to where you were
