Should you use CRT filters?

This might be a stupid question, but does anyone just hood their PC directly up to a CRT? It's doable, as far as I can tell.

Depends on the CRT.
A PVM or CRT? Unless you have an old video card laying around you're fucked without a transcoder.
A VGA CRT? Yeah sure, but it has downsides such as stuttering and different phosphor structure.

Very difficult and you'll need a CRT that can take RGB input. Even then you'll need a VGA to RGB-HV transcoder, and on top of that you'll have to make sure your computer's VGA output can do 15kHz. VGA is a 30kHz specification, so there's often no reason to bother supporting 15kHz in anything made in the last 20 years.

Pi RGB uses CPU rendering, and has timing issues which show up as lines shifting around on screen every now and then.
You're better off using a Wii probably. >>6694469

Agreed. Don't fuck with the aspect ratio.

Personally I tend to use one of the anti dither filters, then a sharp CRT filter to add a subtle shadow mask look for nostalgia's sake on retro consoles.

There's no right answer to this, as it's mainly taste, but there sure are a lot of wrong answers

I use ntsc composite 240 because that's the closest it used to look when I played them on any of my old TVs, just needs the dancing white lines from the badly connected RF cables from the VHS player I had the console plugged into

>> No.6694729

They make me happy but results can be mixed. I think they look great for NES and Genesis games but somehow they look really off on SNES games, like the lines aren't all evenly spaced or something, and vertical scrolling doesn't look great.

>Even then you'll need a VGA to RGB-HV transcoder
VGA is RGBHV, numbnuts. You don't need a transcoder. Depending on the monitor, you might need a sync combiner, which isn't that hard to make or buy.

You're right, I meant RGB-S, which you can't just combine for most monitors.
It certainly is hard to buy, but if you want to prove me wrong go right ahead, because I've been looking forever.

You linked one page that tells you how to build a sync combiner, two PCBs without any components, and an assembled device that OUTPUTS a c-sync VGA.
No anon, I'm not going to learn circuitry and buy a proper soldering kit just to build a single device I need.

Are you blind? The Kenzei has a SCART connector as well. You didn't specify how you wanted your RGBS, but VGA (which can be easily broken out into BNC) and SCART should cover most uses.
>No anon, I'm not going to learn circuitry and buy a proper soldering kit just to build a single device I need.
I didn't ask about your learning disabilities. I said they're easy to make or buy, which is a fact.

Just got a 14 inch pvmeme, I also have a 32 inch jvc with component. Now that I have ordered some scart cables for snes/genesis is it a better option to

A. Order a bnc male to scart female adapter and use them with the pvm

B. Order a rgb scart female to component transcoder and use the bnc adapters I already have, this means I could use the same transcoder on the 32 inch component jvc, but I wouldn't have true rgb on those consoles.

I've noticed this too, and sometimes it even feels off with horizontal movement. Filters might mimic the look of a CRT but they can't change the differences in how LCDs and CRTs actually work which is why I think it still has problems.

I think pixel scaling filters like xBRZ are better. I don't really understand actually wanting a bunch of black lines over the image, it just makes it feel distorted. But even xBRZ doesn't scale things properly all the time and it can end up looking worse so I generally just play unfiltered.
