I beat 'If' today meaning I've finished the Shin Megami Tensei SNES trilogy.
Opinions on the games? Also retro Megaten thread.

That's SMT: If alright. You play it because you want more dungeon crawling SMT but it doesn't especially exceed anywhere. I look at it like an expansion pack.

If... has so many problems, not the least of which includes a dungeon where you literally have to run around in a circle for a few hours until some students dig a hole... in real time.

Awful, awful design all around.

I'm currently going through SMT1 and so far I feel like im forcing myself to play through it, it feels clunky and glitchy, but I respect it for being the origins of my favorite JRPG series.

It looks like an early 1987 NES release desu. And as much as I respect the NES console, the SNES is the oldest retro I can tolerate.

OP here
>>6694431
The dungeons were fucking nightmarish at times. Not only were they labyrinthine, there were teleporters, dark spaces and places where you couldn't even use a map. I really liked the game but it has quality of life issues up the ass. I'd say playing with a guide, using a turbo button and save states are a must. That probably goes for the trilogy in general but especially 'If...'. If you can do it without you have my respect.

>>6695730
If you played it with all that shit you can't enjoy the actual game. And the actual game can only be enjoyed if you like shit in that vein, such as Phantasy Star. It's definitely a niche audience but I think it's a good game and criticisms are mostly due to people not liking the style of game.
It was ahead of many others in terms of the multiple paths which have huge differences yet some convergences, tons of secrets, minigames, big dungeons, a big monster creation system, the weapon crafting system, etc... Then I found out there was pretty much a whole different story if you find Akira, which was sweet as hell. I love the game and prefer it to the others, but then again, I love games like that, especially with a setting like the school and real 'modern' characters, etc... For others, they seem to want to play the game because it's SMT, and need to use emulator tricks or whatever to force themselves through something that's not their cup of tea just because it's in a somewhat popular series where most of the other games are quite different.

For some reason I have yet to go through SMT but I cleared Digital Devil Story three times and DDS2 twice, including KMT.

>>6694663
>it feels clunky and glitchy
That's what you get for playing with a shitty translation patch that breaks a bunch of stuff.
>It looks like an early 1987 NES release desu
Maybe you should play the Megatens that actually were released in 1987 and see for yourself how it would look like on the Famicom.
>And as much as I respect the NES console, the SNES is the oldest retro I can tolerate
Sounds like you just have ADHD and don't like retro games if your justification for not liking this SNES game is that it "looks too old". Also you're a retard for thinking this looks anywhere remotely like an NES game. Let me guess, you also play it on an emulator and fast forward through everything?

You sound like a baby. All of these things are standard dungeon crawler fare. I wonder how hard SMT and SMT2 were casualized if people don't even expect such simple gameplay elements from a dungeon crawler.
>I'd say playing with a guide, using a turbo button and save states are a must

THat is a shitty excuse. Have you played any Wizardry game? They were labyrinthine, full of teleporters, dark places and there was no map, you had to write your own. Which is exactly what this game was trying to be(the whole first MegaTen games, in fact).
