You've got Front Mission 3 on the PS1 which is a fun TBS mecha game, and if you're willing to wade through heavy dialogue, the SRW series is another solid TBS, it's been on a stack of consoles. And you've got Masou Kishin on SNES which got an English patch fairly recently.

Why are Gundam games so bad? Battle Assault 2 was the only thing I had any fun with.

Everything mentioned so far does either mecha or giant robots well. I am a bit surprised no one mentioned Armored Core or Omega Boost yet. I am still a fan of the Virtual On games, but even that has to latch onto the To Aru series to stay alive these days.
