Sup dudes.

Dug out my old consoles the other day and I'm missing cables/some only have RF. Need to get some RGB SCART action.

I know of retrogamingcables.co.uk but when I added 4 cables it started getting expensive (like, more than the cost of 2 Switch games)

Are these cables good enough to justify the price? Are they just expensive on the basis that no one is making new cables anymore?

Also, I have a PAL N64 that I will mod later. Would a SNES SCART work and pass S-video through for the time being, so I can use the same cable when I move to RGB?

>> No.6686779

I have a Saturn SCART cable from them and it works really well, it's better than the generic ones you can find on ebay but I'm not sure if its quite enough to justify the high price

there's a reason chinesium-cables only cost like 5 bucks.

for cables between chinesium-cables and rgc/retro-access quality- and price-wise you might want to look into the.foo83's offerings on ebay

SCART carries multiple signals. At the very least you get composite with an RGB cable as the composite signal carries the sync and is what is used to sync the RGB.

Some consoles output all signals simultaneously. I have a modded arcade board that uses a PS1 AV output and it outputs S-video and RGB at the same time. You could break out the SCART end to Svideo or RGB. Most PAL TVs will accept composite, s-video or RGB through SCART.

My question isn't as odd as it sounds.

>> No.6687057

If you just dug them out and only just now realised you only have rf, it's fair to say that spending any more than £3 a cable is pointless.

They are made for onionboys who can't learn the simple process of soldering, stripping wires and following readily available diagrams online. Learn a skill and stop paying for things you can do yourself. That said, if you're an onionboy who can't solder or use your own hands to create something, they are alright cables. If you're concerned about spending twice the cost of a switch game, maybe you should find a different hobby or just emulate. This isn't a hobby for poorfags unless you are a handy poorfag with some skill.

I have both their PSX CSYNC and DC 480p SCART cables hooked up to my OSSC. Both have great image quality and are worth the money imo, but then I'm in the UK and got them both before this year so it wouldn't be fair of me to say iif it's worth the shipping cost and wait time if you're outside the UK.

See, I would make my own SCART cables if I could find a good source for internally shielded cabling. All of the stuff I can find with 7+ individually-shielded conductors of decent gauge is only available in huge bulk quantities for a lot of money.

I bought a SNES cable from him and the audio buzz was terrible. Pretty sure he's just reselling chink cables from Ali except with csync instead of composite video sync. I replaced it with one from Retrogamingcables and it's a lot better.

>> No.6688154

All my cables are from RGC and they're all upgraded to pack-a-punch. I have 12 i believe.

I'd highly reccomend them. They also make custom configurations if you ask.

Their Genesis/32x cable has a 3.5mm jack that goes into the front of a model 1 genesis, but if you have a sega CD, that jack is supposed to connect to the jack in the back of the sega CD. The CD then mixes the audio correctly and runs it out of the RCA ports.
So, I asked for a 32x packapunch cable, but with 2 RCA male cables coming out instead of the 3.5mm. They had no problem doing so and it worked flawlessly.

However, Voultar shits on them a lot, says they're shittily made. Seems retro-access produce the overall better quality cable but RGC is convenient for us Euros.

I've been buying all my cables from him over the course of the last 4 years because Retro Access is too expensive to ship to me. As fair as the signal quality of all the cables go, it's fine. Some of my early ones exhibit audio buzz but you have to crank it up really high for it to be noticeable during gameplay. The physical quality of the cables definitely used to be of lower quality. The injection moulded plugs would strip away rubber and there were some dumb design ideas like the structural integrity of the ps1 lightgun scart cable, pic related. The pigtail design of the Retro Access cable is much more sturdy. The rubber around the guncon port on my RGC ps1 scart cable has seperated from the plug housing and I'm not even that rough with these cables.

Word is that the quality of his newer cables has gone up, so it should be fine.

This, and I say this as someone who has chased it way too far in the past. I've had fun with it, but that's because I love DIY electronics and building my own cables and components. Honestly, I'm more interested in analog video technology than I am in the games themselves.
If you must get into it, set a reasonable hard limit for how far you want to take it, otherwise it becomes an infinite money pit. The cost of improvements in convenience and quality grow exponentially. The first RGB cable cost me $15 years ago when I started this. Buying and incorporating the two rack-mount AV units I purchased this year cost more than $400. And the units themselves were less than half of the total. I'm happy with the setup, but I don't think I'll be taking it any further.
Again, unless you are REALLY into DIY electronics, stay away. I own pro monitors, and they're fun as a novelty, but I choose to play on a big consumer CRT.

>I'm assuming it's not just the same as their SNES cable even though if the N64 supported RGB properly, it would have been the exact same cable
the SNES outputs TTL CSYNC that needs to be brought down to 75 ohm with a resistor in the cable, the N64's CSYNC is already at the appropriate level
depending on how you RGB mod it you could have TTL sync so it works fine with SNES cables
voultar's mod used to have a toggle for TTL or 75 ohm but now it doesn't and claims to automatically output what's best for your cable?
if you use luma or composite video for sync instead of CSYNC, none of this matters

OP, I bought a cheapo SCART cable for my Neo-Geo CD and I just wish I'd gone with those properly built shielded cables. The image that comes from it is a travesty and it will bother you, rest assured. It's sharp and noisy at the same time. It's like a weird cable-induced jailbar, on a Neo Geo model that has zero issues with it.
>>6686856
Just set a hard limit and stop there. Not too different from keeping yourself RCA A/V only, just need some extra restraint. I built a GBS Control board and bought some scart cables to use in a regular ass LCD TV and that's as far as I'll ever go.
