What are your favorite retro walking simulators?

probably LSD. its not a game really as much as it is an experience so it makes /vr/ seethe. its a special experience that is best to go in blind (very hard now.) the soundtrack is god tier and its probably the game with the best atmosphere. nothing quite like it.

Kings field games are really good at moody plodding atmosphere.
Ive got an idea (and I want someone to post 7 or 8 threads using this super cool nomenclature) we can call games with atmosphere; sphereformers. Baste and greypilled lelcuckjewlibnigger

Isn't a big component, or non-component I guess, of walking simulators that there's no combat? I actually thought about it for a minute and there are really very few retro games like this, there's some jap horror titles that I think could be. Something like Myst isn't really a walking simulator either since the term was invented to distinguish them from puzzle heavy conventional games like Myst

>> No.6682367

>>6682362
Anything that presents a large (comparatively) and non linearish gameplay counts in my opinion. I would say shenmue is more or less a walking/talking simulator, a real time point and click. There are probably more examples but my brain is fried. Its been a few days since I slept more than a couple of hours (withdrawel is a bitch)

>> No.6682413

>>6682367
eh idk, I think a stricter definition is appropriate because the term arose as a slightly perjorative name for first person games where you don't do much but walk. Shenmue is kind of out of a similar tradition of adventure games and story focus but I don't think it is one. LSD is really the only game I can think of you can apply the term retroactively to. I haven't played it but isn't there a game called Mizzuna Falls where you also just walk around seeing scary shit

I agree, but the game doesn't actually have anything to do with drugs.

Yes it is retro as it's designed to be 8-bit, runs on old computers from 2k era, and 04 was very long ago. It's more retro than the OP game.

The reasons why sato was so great was that he was one of the first to experiment with early 3D and digital media in the early 90s. Of course most of the appeal is lost on newer generation.

I was born in 1996 and I live for this shit. The fact that some of my earliest memories are from Windows 95/2000 PCs and old media and game software probably has a lot to do with that.

I really appreciate what they were able to pull off back then, and it's utterly unique. If only people now had half the creativity and imagination to match technology as it progressed, but perhaps the technological advances themselves made artists lose appreciation and inspiration.

I think my generation is the last to appreciate it. Of course, I was born on exactly the cut off between millennial and Gen Z. Most people younger than me would just go, "pffft? What's the point? The technology is outdated and it just looks bad."

It's so weird to me that this game has such an amazing soundtrack and yet it's never actually present during gameplay, just the opening cutscenes. The weird procedural music during gameplay is interesting too though as a concept.

This game looks so cool. Can find very little about it in the English speaking world, looks very ahead of its time in that there are lots of PS1-style first person horror indie games these days that mostly consist of walking. I'd love to play this, gotta learn Japanese I guess.
