Why dont modern games(even indies) recapture this sort of magic? That entire thing(minus the npcs and the egg) was made using just the basic 16x16 tiles on pic related(a ton are just palette swaps).
Nowadays, not having to adhere to such tight technical restrictions, someone would surely be able to make something of this kind that's would be even more impressive, no?
I just checked the overworld of Anodyne(a successful indie game that's a direct homage to Link's Awakening) and it looks like pure shit in comparison. Now that even the pokemon franchise has dropped sprites there's nothing out there keeping this style alive. Am I just blind by nostalgia? And here I thought zoomers loved retro aesthetics...

I was watching a guy who has a company that does concept art for all the big players in the industry. His talk was good but he only hires people who have a realistic style and anyone who joins doing something different will have to conform. Combine that shit with the "cinematic" focus and you basically have a soulless dead industry. Imagine coming in to work for the studio that made Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, you want to make a cartoony fun game, and the guy forces you to change your style for a realistic cod clone. Even the colorful games seem to all be aping the same style from eachother these days. You have some indies with cool stuff though. P

ic related was made by an old artist for some retro games who eventually made an indie title called Slain. I'm kinda bummed he made it a generic indie metroidvania side scroller, because the models themselves look like they have serious potential.

Here's the talk btw if you wanna be reassured why /vr/ will be eternally the best way to play games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYbYvImd7Bw

>>6677198
Valve was able to create TF2 which bleeds soul, but they did limit themselves heavily when making the game (before hats). Originally it was a generic military shooter, then they employed a ton of restrictions on themselves in favor of the gameplay, such has having the background and the characters be different saturation so the character would jump out, among other things. Their entire art style is aped from a famous painter and the game is set in the same time that painter was active in, but this helped the OST which is pretty unique for a game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbdtBLD8Lbg

Modern games are too detailed, even ones that try to be retro. Take shit Chucklefuck makes like Stardew Valley and Wargroove. You start with cutesy graphics and as soon as there's a face portrait there's totally accurate shading everywhere. The detail on lips alone is absurd while a retro game would be content with a black squiggle line.

as far as the map, it's a nearly 1:1 conversion but it's ruined by the wide screen and the constantly scrolling camera that always centers Link instead of the screen by screen transitions. the world was not designed to be seen that way. For me it's how well the overworld feels like an actual world with regions and intersections rather than a maze with sections. In LA and other in-house Zelda's, there are often two or more ways to get to the same place that take roughly the same amount of time. Capcom's overworlds will only have one path that isn't a loop around the entire overworld.

I always thought this map was fucking huge as a kid and I really wanted to explore it all. My copy of Link's Awakening couldn't save (I could hear the battery rattle around when I shook it) so whenever I would play it I'd usually just get up to the 2nd dungeon and then never know where to go next and just explore as much as I could with the equipment I had.

Must've explored around 60% of the whole map without knowing and yet I'd still find an area that I couldn't get to that I wish I could just to see more of this game. Whenever I turned it off and went back to it I'd sometimes just go to the library in game and read the world map they had and imagined what each area would look like from their names.

It's amazing that even after all these years I can see the whole game map so easily. The game felt so big when I was a child but now it obviously so small in comparison to other maps.

Anyhow, does this map count? I always wondered what game it was from.

I was studying this map just this morning. It's certainly very interesting, but many of the water puzzles boil down to set pieces with a little "hmm" to figure out and no real challenge in actually performing a task. The waterfall block area being a pertinent exception.

Neither Dark Link nor Morpha had anything to do with the rest of the dungeon. DL felt like a shoe-horned reference to TAoL's final boss without much thought in its implementation, and Morpha was some designer's wank design (like Volvagia aka wackamole shit) and just wasn't very good. Shame because they established a bunch of neat mechanics like rising water jets, rotating water pools, rising and sinking elements that could have been put to great use in a combat situation.

(oh and ofc the tunic and boot system in OoT is a joke and no more evident than here)

Based, that was a great map and a highlight of the early game. A huge expansion after you're done learning the basics in Mumbo's Mountain, and while not strictly "better" than Clanker's Cavern and Bubblegoop Swamp, it's certainly refreshing as hell to traverse compared to those climes. The later areas at most approach this level of joyous range. I discovered that I always have a blast in TTC with every playthrough of BK and find myself wanting it to continue indefinitely. And that's in spite of fucking Snacker, who adds needed tension to what may have been a too breezy experience.

The Forest Temple is very well designed. I like the subtlety that the two mini-boss fights and the finale happen along vertiically aligned points, as if the skeletal energy in the temple stems from a single vortex of evil. Plus the continuing them of duplication and decoys that occurs with the hag ghosts and Phantom Ganon. It's a subtle theme that speaks volumes without ever getting in the way of the action.

There's a limited amount of magic in the universe, and it comes and goes from different places and subjects as needed. The rest of the time, soul-crushing drudgery descends. Capcom have many strengths, but creating a coherent world, which for all its cartoony and game-oriented contrivances oozes harmony and adorability and thrill, is not their strong point. The Oracles games fare much worse on replay once you have an eye for these things than LA and other core Nintendo games, which age magnificently.

I disagree with your comment on Minish Cap, I like to think it was just more dense and packed. Basically being to LttP as MM was to OoT. Less overall but what it does have is all contained in a small area. If you aren't personally a fan of it then that is fine but saying the overworld was garbage seem a bit harsh to me.

I also wrote >>6690406. Coming from LA, the oracle maps are orders of magnitude worse. In both games, the whole thing is a maze that makes you extremely aware that you are being guided through an item-gated map by design. There's hardly any greater sin for a game than for it to constantly remind you it's a game. I replayed MC fairly recently and the overworld map is dogshit relative to in-house zeldas, in my humble opinion. The dungeons were pretty good but Capcom designs the overworld like a dungeon, which is stupid and annihilates suspension of disbelief.
