Quite many of them in the original 1992 Alone in the Dark:

-I had no idea how to defeat the library ghost
-I had no idea how to kill Pregzt
-I had no idea how to kill/get past the Chthonian in the underground maze
-For a long time I didn't know that you can tame the dining room zombies by serving them the pot of human flesh
-For a long time I didn't know how to neutralize the indian paintings

And so on, and so forth. I haven't encountered such challenging puzzles since Forbidden Siren, and shamefully, I must admit to using walktroughs for both.

>-For a long time I didn't know that you can tame the dining room zombies by serving them the pot of human flesh
So you're actually saying this is a puzzle that bamboozled you
>find a big pot of human flesh in the kitchen
>zombies sitting around a dining table in the adjacent dining room
Fucking hell

There's a section of Space Quest 6 where you need to rearrange the chips in a datacorder to turn it into a homing beacon. Originally, there was supposed to be another item in the game that gives you a hint on how to solve it, but it never made it into the final game. Sierra's solution was to put the hint in the game's manual. I can't remember exactly what the hint was, but it was cryptic as hell. Later compilation packs or digital releases didn't have the manual either, making an already obtuse and frustrating puzzle nigh impossible without a faq.

Another hard puzzle that comes to mind is also from the Space Quest series. Only this puzzle's difficulty has to do one part Sierra's instant death bullshit, and one part outdated tech.

There's a section in Space Quest 4 where you need to escape from a futuristic mall before you get vaporized by Time Cops. In the center of this mall is a zero gravity skating rink, and to survive, you have to float from one end to the other. To do this, you have to float to a very specific area of the screen as the Cops appear, and continue to click your movement from place to place to avoid the shots. This must be precise, you can't just click where the shots aren't, you have to float in a set pattern with exact timing. Any deviation from this means that you will die. If you can't see why this isn't aggravating enough, to complete this sequence you have to go through 3 or 4 screen transitions, each with their own patterns.

Well at least you can save scum it, right? Lol, no. Maybe if you are playing the original version on a PC from 1991. You see, the shots the cops fire, and the movements you must make were coded to the CD-ROM cycle speed for that version of the game. This caused your movement icon to turn into a 'wait' sign as your character completes the action given. As a result, playing it on modern system causes the shots to fire faster than they normally would. It turns and already blood-vessel popping 'puzzle' into an exercise in masochism.

In every one of those threads that's posted where OP asks "want to replay game, remember that part," the image of this damn mall always comes back. It is the thattest of that parts.

Half the puzzles in the original Discworld game.
>need to get a moustache as part of becoming a hero?
>first you need to clean the license plate on a cart at a stable, which requires collecting a pot of soapy water and a brush. When it's clean you read it
>then you go to some rooftops over an alley where the assassin's guild are training their apprentices, and use a knife to cut down a ladder they're using as a bridge
>when an assassin jumps to where the ladder was and falls to the ground, you go down and talk to him
>after he groggily tells you one of the game's running jokes "Did you get the number of that donkey cart?" you tell him the number on the license plate
>this leads to the donkey from the stable being arrested and locked up at the town square in some stocks, and you can use scissors to cut off his tail to use as a moustache

Literally no one solved this by themselves.

The puzzle might be slightly less obscure in Japanese. I looked up the Japanese solution, but without being fluent and trying to solve it myself, it’s difficult for me to say how much of this shit was a game design problem and how much was a translation problem.

That crystal switch puzzle in the Ice Dungeon in LTTP. I only ever did it properly once, the other times I just went to Misery Mire and got the block-making cane prematurely.

When I played 4 Swords I was mentally preparing myself to do it properly, only to find that they'd removed the puzzle altogether.
