The Dragin Knight IV is nice, in the same way the PCE-CD ports of the other 3 games. You lose the hentai, but gain a full dub and some very nice combat graphics and animations, while keeping the core gameplay of the original.
The Pia Carrot port in unironically great. I had a lot of fun playing it. Hentai aspect is very low-key. The game is much more successful in creating a nice, wholesome atmosphere.

>"The console is shaped like a tower PC and was meant to be similarly upgradeable. However the PC-FX lacked a 3D polygon-based graphics chip which rendered the system underpowered in comparison to its competitors. It was also expensive and lacked developer support, and as a result it was unable to compete effectively with its fifth generation peers. The PC-FX was NEC's last home video game console, and was discontinued in February 1998. It was also a commercial failure."

Jesus fucking christ. Still the system loads FMVs without any effort and ditto for jpg backgrounds, had they had something more competent on the GPU front ,that allowed for OK CPSII ports they might even had been able to get away with 2D only.

Design of the PC-FX started in 1991 from what I can gather. Maybe a bit too early to conciser the PPC route.

DK2 on PCE isn't that great and is missing a lot of voice acting.
DK3 completely changed the game by making combat turn based and implementing road blocks.
DK1+Graffiti is the only one that's well done since it came out last and the original game was very basic and didn't even have much content that needed to be censored.
DK4 on PC-FX isn't terrible but it's missing mouse support.

Pia Carrot offers little on PC-FX over the Saturn:
-nipples in the HCG
-voices for two minor characters
-longer intro FMV
Meanwhile the Saturn has a full new character and FMV for each heroine.

Pia Carrot PC-FX has a cool english translation for us EOPs. But Saturn version looks pretty cool, I agree.

DK3 wasn't a great game to begin with. I played the DOS version when I was a teenager, complete with shitty english dub and working designs-tier translation. I was astonished later by the PC-98 version because of the great music (it sounded like crap on DOS), but the combat system was even dumber than on the DOS version. It's nice that they revamped it on PCE, but the cool monster design has been replaced by the DK2 monster girls, and the CGs are lower def, so it's kind of a mixed bag. Unfortunately, there is no flawless version of the game.

I did DK1 on PC-98 courtesy of the Retronomicon shitty translation, and it was fun. I toyed a little with the PCE version and it's indeed better. Combat was totally brainless in the original.

Still have to play DK2 and continue my playthrough of 4.

>but the combat system was even dumber than on the DOS version.
Megatech just added pointless options and sliders that made the combat seem more involved but they didn't do jack shit. The combat in the original DOS version is simple and straightforward, Takeru and Baan attack enemies while Luna can support them with spells. The PCE is the same except you need to execute each action and wait for enemies to do their stuff.

>> No.6674201

>>6674123
Auto combat is not very fun in my book. You auto-grind weak monsters to build up, and auto-fight bigger ennemies later. I prefer a more traditional approach, when item and spells take an action each so you must at least plan stuff a little.

I remember having to use the sliders at some difficulty spikes in the dos version, to protect my fighters while casting spells. Not really entertaining either, but it added a little.

If anyone is ever interested in fan translating any PC-FX game, the easiest would probably be Boundary Gate. Unlike other NEC software there are no voiced sections that are not accompanied with dialogue text. Game is also about 15-20 hours has some pretty cool artwork, and lets you pick in option menu low-medium-high random encounters, I recommend low because then the games bosses at least pose some challenge.

The basic idea was probably to emulate the success of the PC-Engine CD. First release the base unit to get an install base, then the upgrade to keep the system fresh.
But the base unit was too expensive for what it offered compared to the similarly priced PS1 and SS and the library wasn't enticing so it never achieved the necessary install base.
