Was Capcom-Konami rivalry that deep that they were fighting for similar market niches or was that just a coincidence?

Makes me appreciate getting Marvin Missions as a kid. Seems completely random that I chose it now but it was well loved in my house. Played the ever loving shit out of it. The money you got in game accumlated in $50 increments and with every fifty I pretended I could buy that many Jurassic Park Command Center playsets, which was the toy I really wanted at the time. I never did buy one.
