Why does it have so much soul?

For me it's the ultimate video game. Nothing comes even fucking close. New shit still gets discovered over 20 years after it's release. Let that sink in.

While I don't think it's the best thing ever. I would not disagree that it is definitely in the top 5 greatest video games of all time. I also think that any self respecting gamer should include them in their top 10 of all time.

It was very impressive. Nintendo at their best. Incredibly creative, coherent, and fun.
I do think other games have built on and improved this formula since (not retro but Psychonauts is the pinnacle of that for me) but in terms of a huge step forward for gaming, mario 64 was the biggest.

Sega should have made a new mascot for every console, and just kept making 2D sonic games. Although I love Sonic Adventure, there was just no way to make a fully 3D platformer with a character going that fast.

Yeah, recent games seriously lacks creativity, they just take the formula in every genre and recycle it(fps: guns, war, health gets replinished...etc)

Super Mario 64 is great, I hate to admit I haven't finished it yet, but it's on my play list.

I gotta say, the rainbow effect did a lot to add a surreal and somewhat creepy vibe to Bowser's final form. Mainly under the context that 3d graphics in general were still very new at this point so something as honestly simplistic (at least visually) as this can REALLY fuck with someone in a certain way if they didn't know anything about what 3d graphics are capable of, especially if they're used to Bowser's regular color scheme from the earlier fights with him and previous Mario games. Not like Final Bowser's anything like Amnesia in terms of """scariness,""" but at the very least, it's surreal enough to make a young gamer see him to be more threatening cus they're constantly thinking, "why does the funny turtle look like that???"

Speedrunners find new ways to break through it because it's full of holes, and has absurd control mechanics that no other series but Mario uses
Dataminers find new shit because there's unfinished content blocked off, as Nintendo were scared that removing it could bring the whole game down
Autists are still coming up with "lore" because the game is such an abstract jumble of janky and basic elements, you can apply a bit of imagination and come up with no end of bullshit

I was obsessed with this game as a kid since I was obsessed with Mario in general, and I poured hours into it, but I dunno, I always felt like it was actually lacking in soul compared to the older Mario games. It didn't feel like Mario to me.

soulless nu-lorefaggotry is just straight up making shit up, pretending copies of the game are personalized and there are epic secrets that totally exist like a wario apparition and whoa dude look at this youtube video of a romhack haha that's not in my copy, it sure is fun playing pretend!

I actually like the Wario Apparition because the screenshots really did kind of look like some weird off beat beta version of the game you'd see in an old game mag, but I don't really care for how people are trying to make it into some kinda new BEN DROWNED bullshit where it makes your suicide if you see the Wario face or some dumb shit.

I'm probably just biased tho because I always wanted Wario to appear in more main Mario games than just SML2.

The worst part about the nu lorefaggotry is that it's a bunch of zoomers who took the bait of an ironic iceberg making fun of lorefags by including silly and absurd sounding "theories" about an old kids game.

The game does have a lot of soul, but when it comes down to raw game play, the game is really lacking. I recently replayed this a week ago and I still had my nostalgia thrills but i noticed many flaws. About half of the stars for each map are literally filler that add nothing new to the level and usually just have you go one step further than you did before or face the same boss just somewhere else. The biggest offender is lethal lava land where you have to fight bullies for like 3 different stars and the eight red coins is a joke. I feel like the DS remake fixed a lot of the problems with the game while expanding on it.

All in all, sm64, Oot, and FF7 are the holy trinity of "if you didn't play this game as kid, then you won't enjoy it as an adult"

The soul is irrelevant to the gameplay. The truth is the level design was always a mixed bag at best and most stars, combined with the lacking level design, don't actually take into account Mario's expanded moveset. The only reason it's still fun to play is because while nothing too advance is required for any of the 120 stars, it is still oddly satisfying to navigate the levels.

>> No.6672089

The limitations of the games mechanics and map size is what made all the rumours exist in the first place and question why certain things were placed in certain places. These days there are so many things to explore we forget the simpler times where we explore everything we see and crave for some sort of hidden secret the developer never wanted us to know about. Tell me honestly, anon, are you really going to care if you were to figure out that a sprite was hidden and never shown in super mario 3d world or super mario galaxy? My bet is no.

>> No.6672105

>>6672049
Best said It really makes every piece of the game feel special and/or appreciated. I cant really describe you the feeling it has to be the only one roaming the castle alone...it does something to you, There is only one other human in the game and you only meet them at the very end of the game, everything else is a creature. Theres something about mario's isolation and self exploration without guidance that makes the experience exciting. Perhaps thats why I dont feel like I'm experiencing everything when I explore in zelda or skyrim...I dont know. I feel as if thats what op is trying to relate to when he talks about this game.

>Tell me honestly, anon, are you really going to care if you were to figure out that a sprite was hidden and never shown in super mario 3d world or super mario galaxy? My bet is no.
You're correct, but to be fair I wouldn't be that excited for a single lost sprite in Mario 64 either. People are only going to continue to find out things about the game from leaks such as the one from last month. The game has been played to death, we know every misplaced coin, every outside area, etc. Also, 3D World sucked ass so I don't care what beta content people find from it.

>> No.6672160

>8 year old me was excited just because holy shit a new Nintendo console with a 3D Mario platformer with so many stars to collect (though at the time I associated stars with there being lots of bosses thanks to King Bob-Omb)
>kids today are excited because "haha look at this spoopydoopy story about this old game my favorite speed runner plays and these weird things from commercials made before I was born"
It is funny to see how things grow to be appreciated in different ways.
I would love to play the Spaceworld build of the game, so I guess that's something about which I can agree with the zoomers.

I think it was how everything was in disconnected painting worlds, honestly. In prior games you were going on an adventure across the kingdom or an island to reach Bowser, while here it's not even clear if the levels you're going to are even real places.

>> No.6672196

>>6672135
After the leak we have discovered more though and hell after that last one who knows how many rumours may have possibly originated from Nintendo themselves? We may know every wall and every part of the course of that game but you cant deny they all didnt come out at once to get a quicker speedrun time, new stuff when it comes to exploits is revealed quite frequently, and just like how we only know 20% of our ocean I bet there are 80% glitches and interesting things we have yet to find as they might not necessarily be useful to speedrunners but may just be fun in general to toy around with

I don't feel like the in-game 3D models did the best job of capturing the look and feel that Mario developed over the course of the later NES era and the SNES era, which is understandable given the limitations of the console (the official renders still look awesome, so they did at least have the modeling skills to make great 3D Mario). Mario himself is passable, but Bowser, for instance, looks like shit. The environments are similarly not particularly Mario-ish for the most part. It was almost like a return to the less distinct look of the original game, only in 3D.

>> No.6672371

Yeah, very true. This is also why I was really unimpressed with Sunshine, I was waiting a long time to see Mario's world brought to life in a much higher poly count, but then we got a generic resort setting with weird bootleg versions of Mario enemies. Not to mention that weird fucking water pack mechanic.

Of course I do feel like i've wished on a monkey's paw now since all we get is the same cookie cutter Mario style, and even that feels like it's taken too much of a fisher price look to the art direction, I certainly don't remember any pink blue and green dildos with candycan swirl patterns on them popping out of the ground in any of the NES games. They had something like it in SMW but they at least looked a little more natural since they weren't all wacky colors with stripes.

No it didn't. Sega killed itself. Mario 64 and the Nintendo 64 came out after the Saturn and PlayStation launched. Sega's constant fighting among themselves, between their western and Japanese sides, the surprise US Saturn launch catching retailers, consumers, and developers who were waiting for the later release date off guard, and then Sony's price and launch of the PlayStation completely fucked Sega to hell and back. Mario 64 was the final punch to keep Sega down for the count with the Saturn.
