Why is it that consoles always got decent to GREAT platformer games, but computer users had to settle for just alright ones to completely unplayable garbage?

That said, I liked both installments of the Jazz Jackrabbit series.

Because platformers were easily the dominant console genre during the 8 and 16-bit eras, but I'm not sure if this also holds true for PC gamers, other genres like adventures were very popular. Also the vast majority of good 2D platformers were developed in Japan exclusively for consoles, you're not going to find many of them on the Amiga, ST, etc, but you might find some on the X68000.
