So yeah, it's like saying Super Mario Bros wasn't the first platformer. Sure you're going to find other 2D games before where the player can jump. That's about it.

Genre defining works in a way that, by definition, the edges of a genre is always blurry and prone to opinion; but there is a point where if you pretend and try to stretch those edges too much you're stepping out of the genre entirely.
It only flies by for some people exactly because A) like I said the limits of where a sub-sub-sub genre starts or ends is prone to opinion to some extent and B) some people just suck at genre defining because, unlike with movies or books, it actually takes to think about it.
In fact "Survival Horror" is the prime example of that as once the name was established, every game and their mother was called like that such as House of the Dead.

P.S: AitD2 isn't a survival horror. There is no horror theme, and there isn't a single survival gameplay element. It's pure on action with bits of adventure, using the engine or name of a survival horror, like what happened with Dino Crisis 2 or RE4. Again, AitD was ahead of its time without knowing it.

It's okay to say that something didn't age well and you just had to be there.

Most influential retro games hold up, but not all. I can totally understand thinking Alone in The Dark was scary as heck if you played it when you were 10 and the 3d graphics were this massive new step for the future.

But those visuals look awful and unfitting in a way that most other classic titles don't (Sweet Home has been mentioned, and while I'll not vouch for it as survival horror, its pixel art holds up today way better than anything in Alone in The Dark).

The gameplay might still have some merits, but getting super defensive about the art style makes you look like some sort of autistic sociopath who doesn't get the way other human beings think.

Reading this thread more or less convinces me that most of the people saying this game holds up and is somehow way better than all other horror games ever are just a bunch of angry contrarians and autists. Have yet to see one actual thoughtful defense of it that wasn't just shitting on some other game for supposedly being easier, or just furious shitposting.
