Why do the japs love this franchise so much? What makes it different from the others?

Nothing, that's why.
DQ is considered the OG and japs value tradition above all.

>> No.6652291

Because it was basically pokemon before pokemon. I don't mean that it had monster collecting ( though they did add that in DQV ) but the fact that it was an easy as shit to learn battle system, iconic and recognizable enemies that didn't change in design between games, and gave that same sense of "Exploring with your bros" that pokemon fans use when explaining why they like the series so much. Toriyama's art was also pretty damn iconic over there even before Dragon Ball.

No game over. When you die your character awakens in the nearest town, only lost some money but not the loot or experience found.

decent early RPG combined with dragon ball z artist. like most things, people at the right place at the right time is enough to be a cultural event

This! I laugh everytime people claim the NES DQ games (or Mother/Earthbound Zero) are unforgiving... they're pretty manageable once you understand that you don't lose any EXP points. In the case of Mother it's even less punishing because you only lose the money you currently have on the pocket, as all of your $$ goes straight to your bank account.
Most people are huge pussies when it comes to 8-bit RPGs, they get intimidated by the high encounter rate, not realizing battles are very quick and take a lot less times than in later generations, especially during the CD era when on top of random encounters, there was loading times and long ass unskippable attack animations.

Basically in DQ you wont waste your time if you Game Over. Which makes exploring fun instead of dangerous. Now compare that to FF when dying is like reseting the game to the last save.

Not even close.

DQ feels far more immersive than some of the flashier RPGs like Final Fantasy. Something about it captures the sense of immersion into a world that one finds when reading a good book. Look at all the fan art and what people pay attention to when displaying a world one can imagine being in
that you don't see as much of with Final Fantasy or other fanart. Something about the colorful landscapes, the way the fantasy world could work, then, that quality being conveyed in fantasy and isekai manga often with DQ parodies as if to reference the essence of that fantasy environment and then, with more modern games like DQXI, here, that world becomes fully detailed as if it had existed all along in those sprites, being painted by the imagination with each step of the hero's journey.

I think the series was a perfect storm of sorts to attract life-long customers.
>One of the first (the first?) console RPG
>Toriyama's art lending itself to the imaginations of players to connect crude blocky graphics to chibified characters
>A professionally composed soundtrack in a generation of bleeps and bloops

And then maybe most importantly, once they attracted a fan base they didn't screw it up by trying to change the formula too drastically.

>> No.6652614

>>6652581
The biggest change was from 1 to 2 where you now had multiple characters to control. DQ knows what it is and doesn't try to experiment every iteration like Final Fantasy does, which is why DQ is consistently better than FF

fuck how could i forget how amazing the music was? i was so offended when my fellow westerners insulted the "midi" music in the new game and had it rerecorded as bland orchestral shit.

Hydlide Special came out two months earlier.
There had been RPGs on previous consoles like Dragon Stomper for the VCS+Starpath Supercharger or AD&D Treasure of Tarmin for Intellivision but they weren't released in Japan as far as I know.

Honestly it's just nice to have an old-style jrpg that never goes outlandishly far from its core design principles. A steady rock in the constantly changing tides of the industry
