this game is kicking my ass guys. when I go north and then back south half of the time it takes me somewhere else or to a wall instead of where I was before. what the fuck is going on? am I playing a shit version?

The paths curve. You will want to draw a map (or look one up like a gay cheating zoomer). Dropping an object can help you recognize where you are in places like the forest where everything looks the same. Don't feel bad, people are still seething over Zork 1 to this day. You might want to try a more modern text adventure (as in, "also try", you don't have to drop Zork).
