Dumb questions and speculation from an Anon who was at work when all this broke out and is struggling to catch up with you all:

1. The doc mentions there are several Yoshi's Island protos besides Super Donkey, but where are they? All I can find are source files (.chr, etc.).
2. People are talking about OoT and SM64 protos now...? Where?
3. Has anyone thought of the possible connection between Super Donkey and Super Donkey Kong (DKC in Japan)? There's that old story that Miyamoto gave Yoshi's Island's the crayon aesthetic to set it apart from what Rare was doing, and if there were was every any jealousy or friendly competitive spirit on their end, it would make sense that someone would name their own graphics and gameplay experiment "Super Donkey" as a joke.

>> No.6638391

I remember when Master Quest came out for the Gamecube for Wind Waker's pre-orders, it was said that it was the unreleased Ura Zelda, I believe it's even called Ura Zelda in Japan. So this doesn't come up as a surprise.

Some anon said Super Donkey is from 1991

>> No.6638397

How are people ripping the sound files?

>> No.6638401

The current speculation is that Super Donkey was being worked on as a Super Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong 4 when Rare began work on Donkey Kong Country. Nintendo went with DKC, and Super Donkey was repurposed into Yoshi's Island.
If nothing else, Super Donkey being repurposed into Yoshi's Island makes sense.
As for Yoshi's Island itself, there are at least two prototypes of the game but I don't have links to either of them. They're virtually idendical to eachother aside from music: one has Super Mario World placeholder music, and the other has the final yoshi's island music. It's otherwise fairly different from the final game, with different levels, controls, and physics.

>Some anon said Super Donkey is from 1991
That early?! Jesus. It was always safe to assume YI was in development by 1993 because of pic related, but the idea of Nintendo doing something this experimental so early in the console's life is insane. You would expect the art style to have evolved more by 1995 if that's the case.
There's no sign of actual Donkey Kong anywhere in the files though, right? It seems kind of random for them to make a new DK game, but it would make sense of the hanging mechanic (which they saved for the Ukiki in Yoshi's Island). Where DK '94 fits into that theory, I don't know.

It wasn't the developer's idea, but the publisher's. They begged Tradewest for it but got rebuffed due to it cutting into their profit margins. NoA probably would have treated the game better. (It was, however, the devs' idea not to have any passwords).

Someone could ask one of the Pickford brothers (the co-directors of the game) to narrow down when Software Creations met with Nintendo - this would help clear up the timeline of Super Donkey.

Is there any website that lists/shows ALL of the leaks? Something like Unseen 64.
I feel like there's a lot of scattered stuff posted in these threads but it's very disorganized.

>> No.6639412

The archives for these aren't super well organized, so there's probably a chunk of stuff that we have but don't know that we have. A pre-final Street Fighter II Super Famicom build (of all things) was found in the directory for the source code of the German version of Link's Awakening (of all places). I don't personally expect that anything else huge is still lurking in the currently released data, but there are probably a handful of bits here and there that could take some time to track down. I'd love to see more third party builds, but the way those have been positioned in the data makes it seem like they weren't really part of Nintendo's intentional archiving process but maybe random builds that they happened to have... for whatever reason.

>> No.6639415

This, someone needs to organize all this information somewhere. Even a pastebin would work.

>> No.6639423

I just want to be able to see stuff like the early Star Fox and Mario World sprites that are being posted here for myself, but no one piecing them together with the correct palettes or even viewing full maps will explain how they do so. I think they get a kick out of ignoring people who ask. Must feel really cool being able to do shit like that.

Tile graphics are usually in .CGX files. Map data is usually in .SCR files. Palette data is usually in .COL files.

You can open the .CGX files in a tile editor like Tile Molester or YY-CHR.

Getting the palette data loaded is a little trickier. You can open the .COL file in a hex editor, copy the first 512 bytes, and paste them into any ZSNES savestate at the address 0x618. Then load the palette into the tile editor from the save state.

The .CGX, .COL, and .SCR files can all be viewed together as a map in the program linked to here >>6639145

The files are scattered all over the other.7z part of the leak. A lot of the weird old SNES stuff is in the NEWS folders.

>Tile graphics are usually in .CGX files.
I already knew that, but thanks. Ditto for the .COL files, though I'm someone else in the thread could really use that information. I was referring more to the relative ease that people seem to be churning out stuff like that early Yoshi's Island map and these Star Fox portraits when I struggle to get even a Mario sprite to make sense in M1TE. For the kind of person who always to see everything for himself, that's frustrating.

This probably doesn't really matter, but I think the tool the devs used to make the CGX graphics files displayed them in 128x128 chunks rearranged into a 256x256 image. 1st chunk becomes the upper left, 2nd upper right, 3rd lower left, 4th lower right. Pic related shows two examples using Zelda tiles I posted earlier.

Speaking of dev tools and file formats, the CGX, COL, and SCR files all have a footer that starts with "NAK1989 S-CG-CAD Ver1.10 891017" (although the version number and date at the end vary). Is this a known tool?

I was curious about that also. At any rate, thank you for all the trouble you've gone through rearranging these (beta?) Zelda assets. I spent some time in the same folder going through the CGX files but I got nowhere near the results you're showing here. I honestly don't know how anyone has the patience to rearrange so many tiles.

I didn't really have to do much arranging. The tall strip versions are unmodified. So this was all hacked from iQue right? The SMB64 build is the iQue version and there’s nothing for NGC nor Wii which neither were released by iQue.

Maybe the huge amount of SFC stuff from this leak implies plans for a SFC clone by iQue at some point? Maybe before changing to N64 or perhaps as a cheaper alternative?

It's more than just the iQue stuff, there was the Wii shopping channel server-side source in there apparently. This would allow homebrew to setup a working Wii shop for unmodified hardware!

>Judging by the date these were created it's for the SNES. I wish we got a 16bit zelda sidescroller.
Interesting! That rules out it being related to the Koizumi demo, at least. Though it makes me wonder why those sprites exist when they already should've been knee deep into development of ALttP by July '91. I was also surprised to learn that Yoshi's Island was being developed that early as Super Donkey, and the shading style and black outlines of that sprite remind me of that. I wonder if they were drawn by the same artist.

>> No.6640785

The Yoshi's Island we got was definitely the best version. Proto has a lot of janky bullshit and physics-based eggs. Just wish they left some of the soul intact

>> No.6640787

I'm in the same boat as you. Last time we had a leak some kind soul took the liberty of de-CVS-ing everything for those of us who don't get it. And you and I clearly don't.

>> No.6640796

It is now over 12 hours since I first started digging into the leaked files. I've scrolled through ASM files, read naughty Argonaut e-mails, viewed .chr data in dozens of folders, and I never once found these mythical Yoshi's Island protos and it's really starting to piss me off. ys_rom_16_0_save.bin seems identical to the final, ys_rom_0_D and ys_rom_0_D2.bin are just a garbled Nintendo logo and then nothing... what else is there?

Would it kill someone to just write where all this shit is instead of talking about it while the rest of us just have to dick around with every .bin file we see and hope we get lucky?

>> No.6640798

*Forgot to add that of course I found the Super Donkey on my own. That one's obvious. Not these later Yoshi's Island protos.

I don't have a windows machine on hand, but the general gist of it would be to have cvs installed, make an empty directory somewhere to hold the files, then run `cvs -d <absolute path to a directory containing a CVSROOT directory> checkout <absolute path to the directory you created>`.

cvs -d /home/me/Downloads/bbgames checkout /home/me/mydir

Not entirely sure where to ask, but does anyone either have any vague idea on how to 'compile' the LTTP source, or otherwise know where I can go/who I can ask to find out?
I know assembly, mind you, I'm just not used to working with assembly stuff on this scale and don't know how I'm supposed to put everything together.
I'd like to start making basic modifications to the game for fun, and I can figure out the assembly just fine, but, again, just not sure how to put it all together.

Funny enough that's exactly what happens to some of the tracks in Double Dash, Wario Colosseum is on average a 5 minute race. Still they never abandoned the idea of racing through a city, plenty of Mario Kart games after 64 have tracks where you do just that like Delfino Harbor and Daisy Circuit.
