CD gaming is superior, problem is most systems didn't have a read cache or API for the game to tell it what assets to cache.

PSP had it though, from the 3001 series onward. It basically makes it as fast as a cartridge for many games. They even released updates to help games use the cache.

games could have opted to use part of the systems' memory as cache at any point in time, the problem was that memory was a premium, it would not have been cost-effective to have a large dedicated cd-rom cache
like, what would be more beneficial, 2M ram and 2M cd-rom cache, or 4M ram, to use at the developers discretion?

not an n64-specific thing, playstation and other disc-based games were generally much larger, so piracy on those systems was done by renting the games and copying those discs, you can do the same with n64 games
>It also cost an extra $150 if you wanted to play 32MB games.
there's a lot of games you can play with only 16M, like goldeneye and smash bros., though you will probably want to get the upgrade once banjo kazooie or ocarina of time came out though, since they're 32M
it was the reason they were so expensive though, those weren't small amounts of dram at the time, there was no cheaper way to store games that was both fast enough to emulate a mask rom, and rewritable so you can load new games

>> No.6644934

I mean if you would just take them out of your ass every now and then you wouldn't have those problems.

ZIP and JAZZ drives didn't catch on because
1: lack of backwards compatibility with any other disk format

2: drives were expensive

3: Thumbsticks, media cards for cameras, larger hard drives, CD/DVD burners were becoming more available and cheaper

>> No.6645001

>>6636057
you really didn't miss much with the N64.

Sega Saturn was far too fucking expensive and most of the multi-platform titles ran like dogshit and looked worse.

Playstation 1 finally showed that CD games were viable, had damn good controllers, introduced the idea of rumble without a stupid battery powered cancerous growth on your controller, and was host to a metric FUCKLOAD of games from all genres.

a lot of those games were good.

The fact that you can't accept that the Dreamcast was a fucking premature ejaculation of a console makes you the biggest retard of all.

N64 had the worst controller in existence but it still had memorable games and was a lot of western people's introduction to multiplayer matches.

PS1 and PS2 were setting the fucking standard in quality of gaming hardware and the PS2 looked like a piece of stereo equipment and was one of the more affordable DVD players when it came out.

Dreamcast couldn't even fucking play Video CDs without a third party addon, its controllers felt like they were going to fall apart if you pressed a button to hard and only had one flimsy analog joystick. The console also had no built in rumble, ran on a proprietary disc system that was easily defeated by CD-R boot discs, and made the most gawd-awful noise if you didn't put a fucking watch battery into all of your connected memory cards.

You could also buy burnt discs. If you couldn't find them locally you could order them from HK. That was probably the cheapest option. Renting a game was much more expensive.
The N64 didn't need particularly fast memory on the cart. DRAM was just the cheapest option. In the v64 jr they even went with standard SIMMs
