I wouldn't call it awful by any means, but it's quite rough. You might want to just skip 64 entirely and play Legacy of Darkness.
Legacy of Darkness is kind of a prequel to CV64, but also contains an updated version of the original campaigns with the two characters from CV64 after you finish the main story (though some voice acting and cutscenes have been cut due to space)
