>Miyamoto: It was surprising, but once the development was really underway, there were very few ideas that we had to jettison. We knew this would be the last Mario game we made for the Super Famicom, so we wanted to go out with a bang and include all we could.

>If it was a simpler game, one that you just beat once and are done, then you could probably get rid of half of these mechanics, but we designed Yoshi’s Island so players would be able to replay the stages many times. That ended up giving us a lot of leeway for all the things we wanted to include.

Probably something along the lines of
>The fact that so many gamers still name Donkey Kong Country as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" video game ever only tells you how far video games still are from becoming a serious art. Video game developers have long recognized that the greatest video games of all times are The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros., which were not the most graphically advanced or acclaimed or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. I myself rank the highly controversial Super Mario U.S.A. over video games that were highly popular in arcades around Japan. Gamers are still blinded by good graphics. Donkey Kong Country had better graphics than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore it must have been the greatest. Music enthusiasts grow up listening to a lot of music of the past, film enthusiasts grow up watching a lot of films of the past. Gamers are often totally ignorant of the video games of the past, they barely know gameplay mechanics. No wonder they will think that Donkey Kong Country is anything worthy of being played.

You don't need pits to have a good platforming and I think you need to replay the game if you think there are no challenging bits. It is an overall not very hard game but that has nothing to do with quality.

They were thinking this...

>Let's rip people off by making players think this is a Super Mario World sequel, but in reality they are going to play a shitty game based on Yoshi and a baby Mario who can't do shit except whine when you get hit.

Whoever thought this was a good idea, needs to kill themselves.

You were born after this game's release or you would have remembered the unanimous critical praise at the time for this beloved title.

>The fact that so many gamers still name Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" video game ever only tells you how far video games still are from becoming a serious art. Video game developers have long recognized that the greatest video games of all times are Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which were not the most graphically advanced or best sellers or open ended of their times, let alone of all times. I myself rank the largely unknown Nights into Dreams overopen world video games that are highly popular in the west. Gamers are still blinded by unwarranted freedom. Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild has more freedom than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore it must have been the greatest. Music enthusiasts grow up listening to a lot of music of the past, film enthusiasts grow up watching a lot of films of the past. Gamers are often totally ignorant of the video games of the past, they barely know actual game design. No wonder they will think that Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is anything worthy of being played.

Been replaying Yoshi's Island over the last few days cause of one of these threads and let me just say, fuck you. You have no idea what you're talking about.

It's not a Super Mario World sequel because it is fucking better than Super Mario World. Every level is huge and unique and has their own style and they are full with interesting mechanics and secrets. While all SMW has is forest, water, plain, ghost house, castle. Even the castles look totally different in YI.
