FF7
Golden Sun one and two.
Xenogears.
Lunar Legends Silver Star Story.

Probably one of those ^

But I also like silly things like Riviera The Promised Land and Yggdra Union. Also I like Summon Knight 1&2.

GBA isn't retro I know but the truth hurts. Golden Sun meets between the maturity levels of Chrono Trigger and something like Xenogears or FF7. A happy medium.

So Golden Sun. Just not the third. I'd say FF6 is great, or 3, whatever, but the hidden staircase shit and that magical tower are too much bullshit. I got Ultima'd so many times.

Definitely one of the SaGa games if I'm going to be honest, I'm torn between Romancing SaGa 2 and SaGa Frontier. I really don't think people give SaGa the credit it deserves, when it comes to SNES JRPGs, yeah sure games like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger shake up the setting with a unique plot where as SaGa games at first glance just look like Final Fantasy games that aren't called Final Fantasy, and yet Romancing SaGa somehow manages to not only subvert JRPGs tropes in it's story(like with the Seven Heroes) it also stands out as having some of the most interesting and experimental mechanics in the genre, how many games will let you play as an emperor moleman? Not many I assume.

>> No.6634368

>>6634258
I believe that if the Romancing SaGa games had initially been released in the west, then they would be cult classics, as, AFAIK, SaGa games are quite popular in the east. Unfortunately, with the popularity of FF6 and FF7, the industry has been changed forever, to the point where any JRPG that isn't strictly linear, features a large cast of memorable, unique characters, with a story full of cliché moments, is looked down upon. Just look at the amount of people who hated on Octopath Traveler simply for not overtly including some overarching plot and instead having 8 individual stories while this overarching plot was rather implied and subtly presented via side-quests.
Romancing SaGa 2, for me, is peak JRPG as it does best what the genre is supposedly all about: roleplaying. In RS2, it is your adventure, and not someone else's (which is what, imo, it felt like to play through FF6. Even if you changed the names of the characters, virtually everything was pre-defined, leaving no real room for roleplaying). That combined with its experimental, but genuinely great mechanics, s.a. the generations mechanics and its very non-linear structure with multiple ways to approach pretty much every side-quest, made it seriously stand out compared to other SFC/SNES JRPGs of that time.

Also, the "hiding mechanics" stuff isn't even nearly as bad as you make it out to be. Believe it or not, I went into RS3 completely blind and managed to beat it. Have fun! RS2 is easily the most fun I have ever had in a JPRG in a very long time. I'd say it's best to go in blind and not look up a whole lot, if anything. If you really need to look something up, then do that. Just remember to never follow a guide religiously. I made that mistake on my first playthrough for about 40% of the game, as I was afraid of accidentally fucking something up, and absolutely hated it. All the fun comes from trying stuff out yourself and learning shit via trial & error. Don't be scared of...
...party wipes (sometimes, getting your party wiped can cause some quests to fail, if you're in the middle of doing them, but it's, more often than not, not that big of a deal anyway. I'd say save-scumming in that scenario would be okay, if you really want to complete that quest, just don't feel the pressure to do that).
...missing powerful equipment (while it's true that the final boss is one of the hardest SFC JRPG bosses out there, and the entire game is essentially just preparing for it, it still doesn't require you to have obtained the most powerful equipment there is. It's definitely helpful, especially when you don't have all the good spells and techs, but not required in any shape or form.)
...forgetting to spark certain techs (ideally, you'll want to spark a few techs every generation, but it's not required for you to beat the game. Just look at me, I sparked absolutely nothing during my first playthrough for like 3 or 4 generations and still was able to beat the game by min-maxing near the end)
...your battle rank going up (during my first playthrough, as you also earn money from battles even if you flee, I thought it would be a good idea to flee from hundreds of battles in order to farm money in the early game. That obviously quickly backfired as my battle rank was now in the thousands. Enemies were ruthless now, but still manageable by abusing status effects.)

It's not really the fact that it's popular why people hate it, but moreso the fact that the people shilling it are often very harsh to the new and unknown. As they've played what's often called the "best of the best" (obviously due to the popularity of these games, which also comes from nostalgia), they often assume all other games of the genre are bad, not worth playing, and nothing compared to the "titans" CT, FF6, Xenogears, and the like.
It seems as though, looking for the "objectively" best game, people have forgotten how to have fun in video games, and started to immediately hate on any game that isn't consensually seen as some kind of masterpiece, which, according to them, again, is "objectively" good.

Of course that's entirely personal, OP.
For me, it was Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2.
It has everything I want on a JRPG,
>involving, interesting, alive characters
>OG cape and sword hero
>Get to a new town, cutscene, grind a little, go through town's dungeon, repeat
>Cool mounts
>Perfect OST
>Will take it's 80-100 hours to even finish the main quest
>Green, vast open world with the coolest mounts ever
>OG battle system
It just doesn't get more textbook than that and that's something I really admire myself.

While it's true that SaGa games often include more WRPG aspects (probably because it was heavily inspired by Nethack and Ultima IV) than most other JRPGs, it still has a few JRPG things that I like, mainly turn-based combat and these 16-bit, sprite-based graphics. I hate how most WRPGs either have real-time combat or RTWP shit, turn-based, imo, is just much better. As for the graphics, most CRPGs/WRPGs I have played always tried to look as realistic as possible and thus have aged badly. I heavily prefer a good, timeless artstyle over realistic graphics. Oh yeah, and JRPGs often have really good music while in WPRGs it's rather ambient. I probably like SaGa games a lot since they sort of combine what I like so much about WRPGs and JRPGs.

something can be well-made and put a lot of thought into but not the "objectively" best game. It's pretty evident that there's been put more work into Chrono Trigger than Hoshi o Miru Hito, for instance, yet there are lots of SFC games that took a lot of work to produce. If you believe Chrono Trigger is the best among these high-quality games, then that's your opinion. There's no way to objectively prove a game being the best compared to others, and also no point in pretending that anyone who disagrees with you is somehow just being "contrarian". Either you discuss with people and come to the conclusion that it is all subjective or leave the board.
