Opinions on what the best classic doom game was?

>> No.6624354

What, the three games that were released?

Doom
Doom 2
Final doom

I never played doom 64.

Doom is great, but thank god for the ssg in 2, taking cacos and pinkies down is such a slog.

I agree, tnt gets far too much hate. Its my favourite part of final doom. Plutonia hurts my eyes and due to the overpresence of chaingunners, turn doom into a cover shooter. Some interesting designs, clearly supposed to be the ultimate test, but gets too convoluted for my tiny little hands.

everyone forgets the master levels because they 1: don't work with source ports, and two: they're shitty levels

the maps are good, its the music they botched

There was only 1 Doom game anon, the rest were expansion packs and remakes. But if you insist, alright I will tell you my top 3 classic Doom expansion packs.

Doom 4 For Doom (D4D)
Hideous Destructor
Complex Doom
Brutal Doom
Brutal Wolfenstein 3D

playing through doom 64 for the first time right now, I was surprised to learn it wasn't made by id
the environments, aesthetics and level design can be really engaging, but sometimes annoying traps bog it down, especially in hell
the fucking room where you have to grab a key dodging arrow traps from every angle sucks, there's so many so you don't really have a spacial awareness of where you can/can't dodge
on the whole though i don't understand the hate it gets, it's pretty solid

Final Doom > Doom 1 > Doom 2

Doom 1 is solid fun, and has probably the clearest story progression out of all the official games, but the limited roster of enemies becomes way too apparent later on, leading to some boring encounter designs here and there.
Doom 2 has some fun maps, but overall is hit or miss. The new additions were much needed, but unfortunately doom 2 itself barely uses them until the final few levels, which makes for a fairly unexciting playthrough for the most part.
TNT Evilution is also pretty hit or miss, but it does give Doom 2's new additions just a bit more utilization. I also think its best maps are overall stronger than even Doom 1's best.
Plutonia is the most consistently enjoyable for me. Doom 2's monsters finally got their chance to truly shine here, providing a lot of the much needed challenge that Doom 2 itself was lacking. Challenge aside, I also think the maps generally flow a lot better, none of them felt like they overstayed their welcome. The only complaint for me is maybe that the Chaingunner usage was a bit over the top in some levels, though I don't think it ruins the wad overall or anything.

>don't work with source ports
This is false. Every wad in Master Levels is 100% compatible with any source port, as they're vanilla. You just won't get the original frontend for it.

I remember the old "Doom Collector's Edition: The Ultimate Doom Trilogy" bundle release didn't include it, despite including Final Doom.

I never played an old doom game cause I was born in 93 and kinda hated gore when I was little.
Doom Eternal is the first one I've ever played and I've had a lot of fun with it, what do fans of the originals think of it? If I enjoy this new one would it be worth to emulate the old ones on my phone or smth, or is it something that's more cool for the nostalgia and a new player would have a hard time with the older set up?

>> No.6633285

>>6632563
I don't think playing it on a Phone is a good idea, there's plenty of source ports for PC.

Is there any custom WAD from the 1990s that you guys think still hold up today?

this. played through it for the first time recently as well. it's fun but the amount of switches and keys can get annoying. certainly not a bad game, just a different vibe from the other classic doom games.

it suffers a lot from lacking the revenant and arch vile. The revenant especially since there's a fuckton of hell knight encounters where the lower HP of the revenant would've been more suited to them, making it feel drawn out and sloggy at times. Still good though, makes for a nice switch up from the other classic games.

The official DOOM 1 and 2 ports by bethesda for android have the master levels included in the base game.

You dont need a bethesda account or internet connection.
