Its mostly that every sequel after OoT is missing something. And OoT is just ALTTP on 3D steroids, something very few games can brag about.

MM is too short.
Windwaker suffers from feature creep.
TP has problems with the overworld size, linearity and quite weak dungeon bosses.
Skyward Sword has massive problems with cutscenes everywhere and the linearity.

I would argue the series follows a general videogame trend where set pieces means entire overworld areas is useless outside of its set piece.
But its also Zelda, a series of such a high quality that Western Devils still swears its made out of some kind of Jap shinto magic instead of hard labor.
But the graphic style is fucking amazing. So is the way dusk is incorporated into the natural light cycles.

And on the topic of games such as ALTTP. Why is it so hard to design a game as enjoyable as it was?
Lots of clones, but they all seemed to miss the mark somehow. It isn't perfect by any stretch, but it's enjoyable enough to still beat those that attempted to emulate it.

There's 2 Zelda canons.

The kid canon:
3, 4, Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword
The adult canon:
1, 2, Oot, Mm, TP, Botw

Both are good, but there is no reason to play a kid one after you stop being a kid. The ones that didn't make the list aren't worth playing at all imo. Also, Botw is better than any of the kid canon, and Zelda 2 is the best videogame of all time.

Sorry for shitting on the crapcom games, I know lots of gameboy kids have stockholm syndrome for fake zelda. Zelda 3 is always going to be a classic, but I feel like it doesn't benefit you much beyond introducing you to the series. Its good for more playthroughs than any of the 3d games, but that doesn't make it better than them; the 3d games are obviously inferior to the Nes originals. Really the core of the series is 1 and 2.
