6615782 No.6615782 [Reply] [Original]

Another great thing to come from the new SM64 disassembly / PC port project. It seems to run well on my New 2DS XL. Hopefully in the future we'll get the crazy 60 FPS and HD texture mods from the PC port integrated into this, and Nintendo doesn't take it down. Got the download from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCMnutlW9hU

Thoughts?

nintendo is certainly very twitchy when it comes to their IP, and i can't tell you how safe this is, though they've certainly tried not to make it too dodgy, the code you can find on github doesn't contain any of the game's assets, so you can't actually play the game without the original rom still. still, idk, i find it hard to beleive nintendo isn't aware of it, and it's still there, so i guess they're doing something right

>>6629492
not sure how "being in the .n64 format" means anything as far as revision support goes
the extension being specified like this typically means it wants the rom in a certain endianness
the reason we have different extensions like .v64 and .z64 are because that's what the backup tools of old created, and the reasons they're sometimes different is because some tools opt to leave the bytes in big-endian format like what is on the actual cartridge (since the n64 has a big-endian MIPS cpu), or if it was swabbed into little-endian format, for direct readability on little-endian pc's (x86 is little-endian)
changing endian is a reversable process, you just flip each pair of two bytes
if the program wants a specific endianness, then it just means they've not coded in support for swabbing the data as it's read in, so will want the file to be in native endian, that is, the format native to the cpu the program is run on, i'm not sure what endianness the 3DS cpu is

I like how people who defend SM64DS have to pretend that control is suddenly not the most important thing in a game where the analog control was literally the entire selling point and the strongest feature of the game. You know, the game where people have made hundreds of rom hacks with the express purpose of providing more challenges and scenarios you can use those controls in. You know, that game?
I don't even know how much content it would have to add to make up for the severe downgrade in the controls. Maybe like if they doubled the stage count and all the new stages were awesome and designed entirely around the shitty gimped controls. Maybe then it would justify its own existence. But no, the added content we got wasn't close to making up for it. Oh boy new characters that add practically nothing besides having to play as one of them to get certain stars you could just get before as Mario. Not pointless at all. Oh boy new mini levels that aren't well designed and were clearly slapped together just so they can say they added content. Great! New Stars in levels like stupid pointless silver star shit that add nothing besides having more shit to get! Seriously the new Stars barely add anything to the game. The only real positive addition are the minigames, which could have (and have) been included in literally any Mario game and don't even use SM64's controls. What a great remake!

that's what people still have trouble understanding, just because it's a native port, that just means the cpu doesn't need emulating, the game's engine is still producing output for the N64's audio and graphics chips

There's something seriously wrong with the stereoscopic 3D. The 2 eyes don't line up correctly in places of the screen, almost like there's different v-sync lines going on in each frame. Or something weird.

yes, the last 2 .cia have a higher horizontal res. There's versions with 400px that look slightly less sharp but run better on O3DS.

This one runs borderline flawlessly. I don't care about 3d as I only have 2ds systems. Tried on my n2dsxl and looks great, except the text looks blurrier than the borb version. Also got used to using L as the trigger on that one.
If possible I'd like an option to use both L or R as the Z trigger and the Zl/Zr buttons as the camera switch.

No, but it has "hd" support. Some nerds have just figured out how to enable the 3DS' full top screen width in 2D mode. So, you can play SM64 at 800x240(renders at 800x480 and downscaled). Very crisp looking.

This is a native port of Super Mario 64 to the 3DS by Gericom. It's running in 800px mode. Do not run this on the old 2DS as it only has 400px mode. The game runs slow on old 3DS. If you have a New 3DS or New 2DS the game runs at a locked thirty in 800px mode. (The screenshot looks stretched but it looks normal on the actual 3DS screen. The 3DS has rectangle pixels.)

So I need to go in and compile my own CIA. Alrighty then.

I'll probably wait until they have it running at full speed on 3DS with sound and music. At least at 400px.

I don't suppose having it run at 320x240 in 4:3 would help. I wouldn't mind playing like that if it fixed everything, but I bet it doesn't, so I'll just wait for the optimizations and play with my no sfx correct control version in the meantime.
