I can play keyboard, it's just that I've grown uncomfortable with it, playing RTCW a while back (which doesn't support a gamepad, or at least ioRTCW doesn't), I got through it fine, but my fingers were fucking hurting after a while.
I could playtest with the keyboard fine, probably, but I just hate it, and I was pissed because of my somewhat short temper.

Anyway, I remembered I had an old one from years ago, which I stopped using after playing with it for many, many years of near daily play, as the analog stick began to stick to the left sometimes, the mechanism anyway, otherwise the stick itself was fine (barring some sort of material degradation on the rubber on the tip, it's surface is slightly knobly and very slightly sticky, I don't remember that when I was putting it away), I transplanted that stick to my new pad, which lost its stick.

It seems like it's working. Again, my temper can be short, particularly when something costs money for no good reason.

There's still plenty of things that should be improved upon:
1. The lighting in during the first half of the map is the same boring shade. Play around with it more.
2. Every midtexture (like the bars and cages) are all one sided, making it look weird.
3. The mancubus/baron cage isn't marked as impassable, meaning you can push the monsters out of it, or they can get stuck and become helpless.
4. The mud texture on the ceiling isn't animated. This is because you chose one of the textures not labeled with a "1". I would consider changing the mud ceiling altogether, because it's plain ugly.
5. The map could use some more health pickups. Thankfully there was no issue with the amount of ammo you supplied.
6. The lava floors should be slightly lowered, they look odd being on the same plane as the floors adjacent to them.
7. You can press use on one of the random pillars in the final room, which will exit the level.

The really good mapper Dragonfly has a basic tutorial about self referencing sectors. Adding 3D middle textures is fairly simple too, just make sure no new sectors are created when you're making the lines. Having the 3D bridge actually walk-underable requires some trickery with line actions.

My submission for 2048 units. An Appointment With Mr. Pain by ViolentBeetle. I didn't have much time to work on it, so it's basically a speedmap, about 4 hours from start to finish. besides the comic and maybe brutal doom, where did the idea of doomguy being the "strongest" came from?
because i don't think his power level was even that much of a focus ever besides being just being a touch and one of the strongest uac marines
i feel like a lot of it came from an insecure and somewhat jealous portion of doom fans, that looked at halo, metroid, warhammer and more and feared that they had something done better than doom or something that doom doesn't have

It looks like shit and i'm aware of that, more effort was put into the custom boss monster than the actual level. Hopefully someone else can pretty it up. I added more rockets and plasma cells into the level but for some reason UDB didn't save that.

This map is unfair. Gave up at the archvile. Where the fuck is all the ammo, dude? Everytime I get to the yellow key door, I'm out of ammo or have like four shells. Then, after the tedium of punching all the enemies to death here, I'm given a second rocket launcher. I mean thanks, but why is there a second rocket launcher? The rockets are helpful considering I HAVE NO AMMO but also not at all helpful because everything after this leading to the archvile is close quarters combat and all I have is a fucking rocket launcher which is going to deal splash damage to me even if I try my hardest not to. Then after clearing out that tiny room full of monsters, I'm out of ammo and have no way of dealing with the archvile. I am going for 100% kills and killing everything in sight, which maybe you didn't account for? I don't know, just put more ammo in your goddamn map. At the very least two boxes of shells and a box of ammo when you walk in the yellow door. The level itself seemed well designed otherwise.
Also two minor complaints:
-Misaligned texture on wall in the lift next to blue key

I've said yesterday that I'm through with vanilla/Boom mapping, and then I went and made another map for 2048 project. Actually, some time ago I was considering making a WAD called "Coffin Hotel", with four 1024x2048 levels named after segments from "Four Rooms" movie, to teach myself how to make small, cramped encounters. I never went anywhere with it except for the proof of concept for a certain gimmick which is used in this map. It's pretty short, not too hard, but I think it came out rather nice.

You should give ReWired a shot. I haven't played very much of it (only did the first deck IIRC) and it's definitely not on the level of Death Wish's quality but it's the only fan mission pack for SS1 that I've even heard of and what I did play seemed pretty decent. It's also got a new dynamic soundtrack which is interesting considering how the game uses arrangements, and some balance changes like laserrap being slightly more OP but taking up energy. Though like SS2's FMs, it has some fairly awful voice acting when you pick up audio logs.

If the overly bright visuals in Boom is bothering you, keep pressing F11 until you disable Gamma Correction.

Anyway, I couldn't get past the swamp-marble room at the start of the map. A quick summary is that this area is like E4M1's levels of hard, where you start out with not a lot of ammo and it's very cramped to the point where if you don't know where everything spawns on the map you'll get quickly destroyed.

I think you intended for the first chaingunners that spawned in to in-fight the pinkies, but I took a lot of health damage in most encounters. I think it might be better if the enemies spawn on attack, rather than a linedef trigger too. I eventually found the megahealth secret, though.

Swamp-Marble room:

* I didn't initially notice the SSG on the platform to the right due to the threat of the enemies. I'd suggest making the light flicker in that sector.
* The platform holding the RL looks like it you need to walk on health bonuses to get there, but it's easier to walk forward on it. I also tried to also SR 50 due to the weird angle it's on. Make the platforms straight instead of a diagonal pattern.
* There are too many revenants. It's too just it's too tight to dodge the homing without intentionally falling off the catwalk, I think you're supposed to kill them with the RL, but they is no ammo pickups to deal with them and it's punishing if you miss. I'd replace these with imps if you want to keep the pressure on the player.
* If you or the Hell Knight misses the barrels after the RL platform, you don't have enough ammo to safely detonate the barrel, making the Archvile fight impossible.
* There needs to be a pillar or something near the Archvile + Caco spawn. Infighting with the Caco might be the way to handle the encounter it, but dodging, let along surviving both monsters attacks is near impossible, and the SSG will probably not hitstun the Archvile.

It's just really boring. Ironically the most hated part (Xen) is the only time the game gets interesting. Shooting guys in grey corridors/orange deserts for hours on end is not fun. The reason I hate it though is because it also started a lot of ugly trends in the industry which were done OK in half-life but shit everywhere else. There's a bunch of them but these are the 2 biggest ones:
>Focus on being cinematic
>Long world building intro sequence

I have heard so many devs of other studios always reference half-life and that intro sequence as being epic. However, in 99% of cases games that copy it do a fucking shoddy ass job. It's one of the reasons I stopped playing modern games. Dishonored for example. Everyone jerks it off to being so great, even former Thief devs, but when I played it: First 10-20 minutes is no-gameplay intro sequence, followed by peaceful world building/semi-tutorial area, then the gameplay slowly starts coming in but throughout the game you'll be interrupted by people blathering words. By the time the game actually started I was already sick of it. Sound familiar? It's almost exactly how half-life starts. Except modern games have turned the shit cinematic/useless NPC dialogue parts up to 11.

In half-life it probably takes 10 minutes for the game to start. Every other game it feels like it takes 1-2 hours before it becomes a real game.

set up doom builder (select doom 2 iwad file)
choose doom or boom map format for your first map
draw lines and squares, place objects,
figure out or read about how linedefs, upper middle and lower textures, texture offsets, sectors, linedef actions work
check out what upper and lower texture unpegging does and don't forget to set upper unpegging on the walls where a door is
learn the shortcut for to automatically align texture offsets, but don't rely on it too much since it can sometimes fuck up the alignment of your wall textures if you're not careful
if you want to learn about more advanced stuff read about dummy sectors, self-referencing sectors and voodoo dolls

There was a minor texture misalignment in my WAD that was driving me nuts, so I went and fixed it and bunch of other stuff, also found and fixed a bug when it was possible to grab the red skull without triggering the shenanigans.

So, I'm a newbie and I'm playing valiant. I am getting my ass handed to me almost every single level. I am so fucking frustrated.

My first run was the standard difficulty, HMP. I made it a few levels with a number of deaths. I took a break for awhile, and in my new run of HNTR, I've really fucking struggling. I have to save multiple times per level in hopes that I'll be able to make it to the next. I just beat Map10 (e2m4?) after a week of casual play. That major fight, against a cybie, in close quarters is going to ruin any new player, even in ITYTD.

I would say that I'm on the upper tier of bad/lower tier of a good player. I'm just thinking about iddqd-ing this map-pack. It's been cool so far, but waaaaay too fucking difficult for me.

In that case, would it be possible to sneak in a MAPINFO lump, so that if you play it in a ZDoom port, the additional maps can be played in a sequence from 32 and onwards, and on the last one you exit to 16?

You can actually access maps of any number by using the -warp command line (example, -warp 33). Doesn't work for the original DOS/Chocolate Doom apparently, but does work with Crispy Doom and prboom+.

Maybe try skill 1 pistol-starts no-saves on each map.

Preacher.wad is another good one to try on skill 1 pistol starts no saves, though I dunno how its difficulty compares to Valiant.

Base Ganymede is a good noob-friendly megawad. I haven't tried it on skill 3 but on skill 4 there's barely any health so you can get punished hard if you exit a map on low health if not doing pistol starts, but it's a Doom 1 megawad so it's only limited to the Doom 1 bestiary
