Thing is buying books costs money and it is time consuming to scan. So most scanners rely on donations. This guy just popped out of nowhere and is shitting out scans like it's nothing. Very strange. And because of that I fear he might just vanish one night if we take notice so make sure to save everything worthwhile.

I mean maybe we got lucky and a millionaire hired a guy to scan books part time or something but whatever. it's weird.

Could be. But you gotta debind books to get a good scan meaning you destroy them and thus destroy their value. Scanned debound books are resold but they go for a fraction of the original. So typically when you buy books to scan you know you're destroying them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD2C4Gc8NTM

It even has auto page turning.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMD9a2h2ZKQ

This would make it a breeze for one person to go through a lot of books, even with a glued binding. Skimming trough the AoF2 book the page scans even in size, flat, and I don't readily see damage along the gutter edge. The cover and initial bits has weird divisions though which would suggest some kind of automated process involved.

Such a scanner would've been a godsend at my old job where I scanned books for a library. Two pages at a time, turning them by hand, having to reset the scan boundary every now & then as the position of the pages slowly drifted.

We're in a renaissance for gamebook scanning and translations. Hundreds of mystery scans are popping up on Japanese sites and there's multiple groups uploading to internet archive and other places. Gamest is like half scanned by the Japanese mag scan project.

Other than just purdy pictures, this is a boon for information on old games. A lot of the big titles from Nintendo and other big companies that got western releases of course we know a lot about. But there's niche games that never got release outside of Japan and have little coverage on. Who made them, why, what were they thinking, etc? Total mysteries. This information is then placed in an easy to access manner no fan wikis and wikipedia.

>> No.6620980

>>6620972

Wikipedia straight up just deletes articles because they do a search, see that english sites like IGN have never commented on the game and declares the game non-notable. So why would an English site started around 2000 talk about a game from 1991? For that you need Japanese sources primarily.

And HG101 had a monopoly on these games since they were the only ones writing about them. But they write sloppy rushjob articles farmed out to random idiots. Breaking their hold on retro game articles is very key and important.

They're technically right, but we're also talking about magazines published in the 80's and 90's. They made their money on them and they are not republishing them. I mean, I really think they should! If they made Gamest collected into like 5 big books I'd buy it. But they're not doing that, and in fact it's a similar situation to old games where it's costly and impractical to adhere to the law and it's just easier to share. And we get into a situation where pirates are the ones who actually preserve all this shit. 3/4 of these companies don't even exist anymore and the ones that do they only focus on short term profits and they won't care about 30 year old games or magazines. Without pirates you could easily see most of this stuff being lost.

Like imagine 2100 some library asks around and discovers that we lost huge amounts of magazines from this period because no one bothered to keep them or preserve them. A lot of old nerds are either collecting mags or keeping the ones they bought, but do you think their family or their descendants are going to care? They're going to chuck old grandpa's shit into the trash the second that 90 year old dies. And if you think this shit is silly, we have lost so many old films before 1950. Most silent films are gone, and most Indonesian films before 1950 are gone for example.
