I will admit to being spooked about disc rot but bit rot not nearly as much. A lot of video games that were poorly stored or severely mistreated have not been the ones to re-enter the marketplace. Those games are probably in landfills. I would say that a considerable amount of games that are currently being bought-and-sold as of right now had an adequate level of care, since ultimately they're in the marketplace because 1) they still work and 2) someone remembered were they were---because they cared about them in some fashion.

Of course the reality is that millions of video games have been disposed of, or are sitting in damp cardboard boxes and will be for the next fifty or sixty years until they get wet when a sub pump goes out during a rainstorm or something.

These old games and systems continue to dwindle year after year, and yet their popularity only grows thanks to YouTube and millennial manbabies who now have money to relive their childhoods. It's possible that individual items might go down in price, like if somebody discovered a warehouse filled with unsold palettes of a particular game; but the market as a whole is going to explode. Pro tip: start collecting Wii games right now because in 5 years they are going to triple in price. I've already seen massive increases in the price of N64 and GCN games that I bought just 2 or 3 years ago, and corona has accelerated it further. Don't even bank on prices to go down once the manbaby rush is over because the zoomers collect old shit too.

These games are eventually going to crumble no matter what you do to protect them. So, if you really care about video games, emulate. Hoarding plastic is for virgin retards. I legitimately enjoy taking advantage of these mentally ill soi-men because of how ridiculous this "hobby" is.

Gamecube yeah. PS2 not so sure. The systems are going up but games are still cheap. Its the best selling system of all time. There were a few thousand games on the system. I think prices will stay low. RPGs will go up, obviously. But some of them will probably stay somewhat low since there's better versions on newer systems.

I don't expect Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts to shoot up to absurd levels since the HD versions are widely available and use the Final Mix versions or whatever. Xenosaga is going up because Xenoblade is huge and those games aren't available elsewhere. Yet.

At least with the SNES Final Fantasy games, the PS1 versions were somewhat inferior due to load times. The HD versions of X, X-2, and XII are the better copies.

But by then surely emulation will have improved to the point its perfect. And you wont need the discs, so who cares? I would be shocked if it wasn't the case.

In the meantime if a game doesnt properly emulate, it makes sense to buy the game. Not every game surely but a small handful is more than reasonable. And if you get sick of it you can sell them later.

Did you do science in school? Plastic will outlast us all, even your yellowed old gameboys (which retards need to stop 'fixing' with hydrogen peroxide). I'd worry about the metal components corroding over time but they're usually housed in relatively sealed console shells and not exposed to the elements, these components are designed to withstand conditions like elevated temperatures so that's an non-issue. Of course everything has a useful lifespan but modern caps are powerhouses, they'll last a very long time yet.
These new systems (everything disc-based post 1994) are pretty fucked and emulation will eventually be all there is. The older 8-bit and 16-bit cart-based ones though? They'll be fine, especially the older Nintendo shit. Because they're basic machines they have less possible modes of failure, ergo they will live far longer than you think.
In 20 years these collections will be fine provided they aren't being curated by fat slobs with no personal hygiene, the issue are the kinds of people who hoard plastic to worrying levels.

I don't think you should care about what games are gonna be on your shelf during a recession, anon.
But otherwise I don't think it will. Most people don't really care about physical media per se, it's just that having the original console and an original copy is the only way to play some games nowadays. Collectors aren't the sole buyers and sellers of retro games.
Ideally we can hope that emulation gets so good so cost isn't the deciding factor of playing some amazing game or not.
But to answer your question I don't think it will. Games are a commodity, genuine copies of games are a commodity. They are not involved in any kind of production cycle as they only being circulated by pre-owned stock. They won't go down because there is no reason for them to go down. People not having money is not a reason for people to start charging less. IF that were the case you would've seen price drop already.

I think what they're doing is equally laughable, considering unless you have the HUGELY RARE AMAZING ULTRA THOUSAND-DOLLAR GAMES, your profit margins won't be anything spectacular, which is why most retro game shops die after a year or so. They appeal to a niche crowd, half of which includes people only interested in reselling, the other half of which only care about really specific titles.
