Why are you using Sonic+Tails OP? Tails only saving grace in 2 is cheesing the (already relatively easy) boss fights. Switch out to just Sonic and you should have a much easier time on Special Stages.

At minimum. Emerald Hills has at least 3 checkpoints in its two acts. You can get Super Sonic by Chemical Plant if you know what you're doing.

Hell, I just went back and did Sonic 2 + Knuckles and it's even easier. All of the ring requirements are lower with Knuckles, and you even get to keep your rings after doing the minigame.

>> No.6609065

You could do that soft reset trick and just get infinite tries using the first zone.

It's mainly just there because pseudo 3D was really cool in 1992. The bonus stages in Sonic 1 were much more enjoyable.

I remember hearing that you get a continue if you get all the rings in one of the special stages. It seems flat out impossible in any stage but the first and even then it looks like a nightmare.

It's now decades later and I have no idea whether it's true or not. Anyone know?

>> No.6609227

50 rings in a sonic 1 special stage got you a continue but not sure how they worked in 2... seems if you were good enough to get all the rings in the half-pipe, you wouldn't even need continues.

Yeah, when you play well, Tails is a just a very light backup who can bring you a few safety rings. The absolute only thing you can't do is try to jump while getting hit by a ball. If you do, Sonic won't jump but Tails will, and then Tails is in front and its hard to readjust him towards the back.

>HOW TF WAS A KID EVER SUPPOSED TO BEAT THESE THINGS
Like this: Imagine being a kid and not having unlimited games and emulators with save states. You had a couple games to play and that was it. If you played this game ever day after school for 6 months to a year, you would beat it even if you were 8 years old.

>> No.6610517

But getting all the emeralds ruin Sonic 2 because you automatically activate Super Sonic when you jump

>> No.6610561

It's just a case of needing to get good. That's just how special stages typically work. You start off being really shit at them but then you learn more about them, memorize the patterns, and have a better understanding of the mechanics of it all and you are more likely to succeed. It's all a part of Sonic's core design being based around replay value. On a first blind playthrough you're gonna suck shit, but once you go back to the start of the game and run through it again with the knowledge you have from your first playthrough you can be faster, use the secrets you discovered to your advantage and get the emeralds. Sonic games were never meant to be played once.

>> No.6611791

>>6608781
I've never been able to get the 7 emeralds in the original version without save states, but the remastered iOS port is very doable since the framerate is better and you can use your lives to immediately restart if you fuck up.
The stages are definitely poorly designed though, since there are certain spikes you flat out cannot see coming over certain inclines, so you just have to remember they exist from previously hitting them. Not to mention how choppy the original version of the special stages were.

Definitely my least favorite special stages of the classic games.

>> No.6611804

>>6608785
stage select code gives you the Super Sonic powers without having to play this crap.

>> No.6611807

>>6610561
That's not how all the special stages worked in classic sonic though. I don't need to have played through Sonic 1 and 3's special stages to git gud, I just need to play well. With Sonic 2 there are certain special stages where you're literally not getting through without a heap of luck (making a blind jump at the right time despite lacking the knowledge that you're about to get hit) or having already failed and getting a second chance at the special stage.
With Sonic 1 and especially Sonic 3 & Knuckles, if you think on your feet and react to what the game is throwing at you, then you can feasibly beat every stage first try once you know the rules of the special stage, Sonic 2 fucks up by making certain hazards impossible to react to without knowing they exist.

In this case you have to compensate for Tails being a retard or play with 2 people. Probably some game designer being an asshole and trying to force you to have 2 players to get the good ending.

You're full of shit. In order to beat the 1 and 3 ones, especially later ones, you need prior knowledge of the layout. The Sonic 2 ones are way more forgiving.

He is right. the first time you play you will make blind jumps in the corners because it is impossible to know if there will be spikes or bombs around. Special stages are forgiving until 3 or 4, then starts to get "you need to memorize". Tails is also a problem, and most will choose Sonic & Tails the first time playing

1 can be done blindly. 3 only in certain instances you cant see what is coming and that is when you go through those bouncing spheres, but since 3 throws so many big rings is not a problem.
In 2 it gets annoying that thing of resetting the rings and having to collect all of them again to get another checkpoint.
