Dreamcast thread

>> No.660829

It ran smoother than and, in my opinion, looked just as good or better than the PS2. Why did it fail more quickly than other consoles? Were developers just used to going with Sony from the PS1, or was the PS2 somehow better to program for?

>> No.660836

>>660829

A large part was that EA decided not to support it with its sports titles. Whatever you may think of them those sell in truckloads.

Does (or can) the Dreamcast output at 240p?

>> No.660848

>>660829
Sega had a rough time recovering from their mid to late 90s failures. They were rapid-firing systems and add-ons like the Sega CD, 32X and the Saturn, and they spread themselves too thin. Dreamcast was a step in the right direction and it had an amazing launch lineup, and a good run after that, but Playstation had a lot of support from developers and fans, plus the ability to play DVDs was a stupidly huge draw for most gamers.

Dreamcast would have saved Sega under different circumstances. Unfortunately in this reality, it was doomed from the start.

>> No.660858

It has VGA support and can output at 480p.

Not just gamers really. It was at the time a relatively cheap DVD player at that and I knew at least one or two families who actually bought it as one. It's similar to the PS3's bluray only actually relevant.

I'm pretty sure PS2 had better specs but that's cause it came out later. Dreamcast was just ahead of its time. Online play, half of the functionality of a computer etc, some of the stuff they were pushing didn't come out until the ps3 / xbox360 and the controller thing is kind of similar to the just released wii u (I don't follow modern consoles but their commercials kind of remind me of the dreamcast controller).

The PS2 was more powerful, but all the games that came out on both consoles looked better on the Dreamcat. Especially Rayman 2.

Dreamcast was a very arcadey console. It had something solid in just about every genre there is.

D2. Great game? Or GREATEST game?

Probably neither, but I think it is neat. It is a survival horror game that isn't really like your resident evils or silent hills. It is more stephen king-y

Would have been better with 2 analog sticks

So would most games...

What the fuck am I reading? The Dreamcast's failure had nothing to do with its library. Sega and Capcom pumped out a metric fuckton of great games in only two years.

The Dreamcast didn't even fail, it just didn't succeed rapidly enough to overcome the Saturn's disastrous life cycle. If you want to blame something, blame the lack of a DVD drive and the PS2's hype, but don't blame the library.

Skies of Arcadia is a must for RPG fans. Grandia II is pretty good, too.

Cannon Spike is a must play.

Platformers... I'd honestly stay away from the Sonics. If you've never played Rayman 2, the Dreamcast got the best version. Super Magnetic Neo is a fun and quirky game too.

Fighting games... oh boy. The Dreamcast is the single best fighting game console ever made. We'd need an entire thread just to talk about Dreamcast fighting games.

I'm finally getting my first Dreamcast. It was kinda hard to get one with decent price, because the yuropoorean versions are kinda rare-ish. Got bunch of controllers, rumble packs and VMU's with it. The package also contains about 10 games, but I have no idea what they are.
The whole package is still being handled by Fedex, I hope I'm going to get it this week.

For every disc-based system I've owned, I've had discs that seemed to be in pristine condition except for one minor spec of dust that would prevent it from booting. Oddly enough, this happened with my copy of Power Stone years ago, and also a copy of Tomb Raider: Last Revelations. If other games seem to work fine, it's probably just an anomaly, so don't go tinkering with the laser's potentiometer just yet.

Also, this thread has made me want to start Skies of Arcadia finally. I just started a new game.

It's bad as an adventure game, but great as an experience.
