Probably a tie between this, Icewind Dale, or Neversoft Spider-Man for me, but Diablo left the biggest mark on me as a kid. if it hadn't been for my irresponsible uncle letting me play this while blasting heavy metal and supposedly babysitting me, I probably wouldn't be as much into PC gaming as I am.

I would say Diablo 2 but I think I didn't play it until 2001 maybe. So I'm going to say Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Honourable mentions to N64 games Banjo Tooie, Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask.

If they made a sequel today it would be 1/5th the length, the gameplay would be a 3rd person hack n slash, the item system would be removed/gimped, half the monsters wouldn't be there, the story would be shallow, the atmosphere and sound effects would be generic and soulless

All the sound effects where made by a guy taking white noise and distorting it till it sounded like something. They would never do that shit today.

I have faith it'd be good if they brought back Yasumi Matsuno. For me, I wouldn't complain about hack and slash, it'd work fine with some Souls-style combat as long as it kept the item/weapon system. What I was really there for was the atmosphere, story, music, characters, the preparation required with making sure you're ready for each combat scenario, and hours of pushing blocks. If they had all those things and made sure I wouldn't waste so much time entering and exiting menus (how did they not have a quick weapon change shortcut!?) I'd be happy.

that said i was stupid enough to play it on a DirectX9 machine without patches and the bugs were crashing the game or giving me weird glitches.Though the glitches might be because of the integrated GPU i was using.

I played it on a Voodoo 3 3500 which I think came with the game included with it. That and maybe Descent 3. Still got the card and the box at my Parents place. The cards in an old P3 system my dad has windows 98 on still.
