>Are retro games in a bubble due to the pandemic?

Not exactly, it's due to market manipulation and heritage auction houses branching out into video games.the pandemic doesn't help though.
Every middle aged fat fuck with an ebay shop is now hunting for "rare" games because of the recant WATA sales and WATA pushing their agenda on pawn stars.

https://youtu.be/9KS9kRUCEVA

The guy rick calls in to "evaluate" the game is the CEO of WATA and throws around blatant lies like "people have turned down offers over over $300k" No one outside of rich autist gave a fuck about hangtabs on fucking mario until WATA showed up. Oh yeah WATA's rating system is shit too, a 9.0 in WATA terms is equivalent to a VGA 80. that copy of mario on pawnstars used to be in a VGA case till someone cracked it out and had WATA grade it.

The good news is this is a speculative bubble,it will pop. Any not retarded real investors know this is all bullshit as games don't have a record of prices like say coins do so you are taking fucking MASSIVE risks buying donkey kong jr on the NES for $20k. But WATA and heritage auctions stand to make fucking tons if idiots start thinking games are the next comic books.

People have been talking about retro game prices dropping for over a decade now. It's never going to happen, prices are only going to keep going up. In a few years time even shovelware is going to be expensive because millennial redditors with money want to fill a void in their empty consoomerist lives and games from their childhood fill that void.
Be happy with whatever games you got or get into emulation and flashcarts.

You think HS and college kids are going to get jobs and plunge money into retro games they didn't grow up with? The younger generations grew up with digital downloads, they have no nostalgia attached to physical copies.

Plus, it's not even game collectors buying this stuff. This shit just isn't sustainable long term. We're talking about mass produced games that no one wanted. We don't even know how many copies are out there.

Some games are in a bubble right now. Retro consoles are in a mini-bubble right now, but this is all happening too fast for prices to rise in a way that makes coherent sense. Mario 64 is up. People are pointing to the comic book crowd getting into vidya as what's causing this but I think they're thinking about it too hard. Sealed mint copies of garden variety games going for big bank instead of something like Nintendo World Championships is a symptom of wealthy collectors with no particular vidya affinity starting to collect those games. Those people could give a shit about Color A Dinosaur or Flintstones II.

Just like there is no short supply of wealthy art collectors who don't care about art or know anything about it. It isn't about the item collected, it's about the trans-mutation of cash assets to other assets. and sometimes about money laundering.

It's a big scam the owner of an auction house who also owns the game grading firm "wata" sold the game to himself and got shitty news bits printed in response.

This guy is manipulating the market in hopes of getting more people into "high end" game collecting because if it gets big it means he makes tons off of grading games and brokering deals. This is a fairly typical scam, it's plagued the art world for years.

also>>6602513

I am no economist but I have been "collecting" since 1997.

I think it will get worse. I don't see the games becoming "worthless" (even though they are by every pragmatic metric. Flashcarts, Superior emulation, Repros, Virtual Console/Official emualtion).

The people doing this aren't into videogames like us. Sure they might like mario but at the end of the day they are just trying to make coin.

I think so long as we keep a historical record of the artificial inflation we can teach future generations why not to buy the originals (that will inevitably be sold for shit loads of dosh). You will see James on Antique roadshow in the year 2032 evaluating games believe me.

I think if you are looking for fun pragmatic collecting (what retro game collecting used to be) we are going to have to go the repro route which is honestly a nice change for someone whos so fucking tired of seeing the same HURRR I JUSTNBOUGHT A SATURN BROS post online for the hundredth time. Bring in the weird obscure repros.

There are two dangers that I see that MUST be stopped by any means necessary.

1) These assholes start lobbying against emulation, preservationists, and flashcarts

2) CRTs (which cannot be duplicated using flash media) start going for ridiculously high prices.

The only way to counter all this buffoonery is to educate future generations that these games were LITERAL GARBAGE. Tossed to the side when new consoles came out. The most anyone should pay for a game that sold a million copies is $40 at the very most

I think emulators in the end have a smaller market effect than anyone here seems to think. If a normie decides they wanna play an old game, they might plunk down for an N64 and a copy of Wave Race. What they absolutely will not do is come across an Everdrive organically. Emulation is a kind of middle ground between the casual dorks and the super-gone collectorfags.

Stupid used media store near me was trying to sell a Castlevania SNES repro (in a box that seemed original) for sixty bucks. What the fuck is that shit? My guess is that the seller informed them it was a repro but they didn't have an in-system way to price it correctly.

How do I tell whats a cheap repro cart and what the real thing is?

There are sometimes telltale signs on the label but they go from being pretty-close to very good looking. Unfortunately the only real way to know is to open the cart and peek at the insides.

It's what reddit normalfag american bandwagoners are after. You'll notice how obscurer consoles like Master System and PC Engine haven't moved.
