FFVIII is the worst. It combines the worst anime tropes with a focus on romance when it could have told an interesting war story. The combat system is devoid of any purpose- when it's designed to be broken there's no inherent meaning to fighting at all- there's no sense of progression that RPGs are known for. It's all a fantasy for cringey boys who wish they were the cool kid in high school. If you were already able to get girls in high school the game has absolutely no merit

Most of your issues with FF8 seem to be your own insecurities projected onto others. However I can understand the "why wasn't it a war story?" Idea to some degree.
The problem there is that FFT (and FF6 to a degree) was already a war story. How many war stories did we really need? The decision was made after FF7 to make the next one more light hearted, so it ended up taking the form it did. That's about it.

But the true final red pill is knowing that not every FF is for everyone and it's OK not to be a rabid fanboy of literally every entry of the series. This. There is no way Sega could have known that FF8 was going to be as devisive as it was. So picking the same release date as the follow up to the (then) most loved RPG of all time was just moronic.
People.claim it was PS2 that killed the Dreamcast, but PS1 did all the real work. By the time PS2 was poised to "win" DC was already dead in the water.
Everyone also seems to forget the PS2 console shortage those first months. DC could have flourished in an environment like that, except PS1 had some of it's best years around then as well.
Sega never had a shot.
