The rules are way too vague at the moment. Right now, there's is a Hitman: Codename 47 thread that has been up for an entire day, in spite of the fact that the game was released on November 21, 2000. The only rule that slightly pertains to this is as follows:
"Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier."
Apparently, this means I can post a Halo 1 thread, as I can make a Windows 98 rig with parts from before 2000, and be able to play it. Yet, if I posted a Halo thread, it would obviously be taken down immediately. I can accept pre-xp games being allowed, but please make a rule specifying this, as all of this feels very arbitrary at the moment.

Halo was launched on the Xbox, a sixth generation console released in 2001.

Hitman was launched on Windows 98, a platform launched in 1998.

This is very easy to understand, and you need to quit ruining threads and spamming new ones because you're asspained that the people here like the retro rules as they are.

Don't worry, xbox games will be allowed once the 9th gen consoles launch and the sticky is updated again

Yes, it was launched on November 21, 2000. You're clearly ignoring the main point.

If retro wasn't a retroactive term, we wouldn't have added Dreamcast

>> No.6583171

Retro should be based on the game's release date and whether or not the game is at least 20 years old, that would considerably improve /vr/.

Agreed. Instead it seems mostly about aesthetics and hardware, which to me are sort of arbitrary things. A 2020 game released for the NES is apparently okay to discuss on this board because it's for an old platform, which is ridiculous to me, it's like calling a new black and white movie filmed with old cameras an "old movie". This should be a place to discuss video game history, not contemporary releases.

>Crysis would be a retro game in 7 years
Yeah, nah, that's retarded.

This is what I'm talking about, the rules are too vague and don't specify this for PC games. I'm not saying I want Halo threads(because I don't), I'm just saying the rules need to be more specific.

>> No.6583185

There is a reason we called Halo baby's first FPS when it came out, and lo and behold we were right.

Now fuck off.

That's not my point, my point is the rules are too vague at the moment for PC games.

Half the board is illiterate so it's going to be difficult to discuss rule reform.

Alright, let me see if I can dumb it down for you.

The. Age. Of. The. Game. Does. Not. Matter. It's the platform that it is released for.

Here's an example. Digimon World 3 was released for the PS1 in 2002. The PS1 was released before 2000. Digimon World 3, despite being a 2002 title is a retro game. Halo was released for the Xbox in 2001. The Xbox was released after 2000. Halo, despite being released BEFORE Digimon World 3 is NOT a retro game, because its system is not retro.

Do you understand? Or are we still trapped in that vacuum where neither your ignorance nor the easily understandable explanations can ever intersect?

OK, now define the age of the PC platforms.

>The. Age. Of. The. Game. Does. Not. Matter. It's the platform that it is released for.
In that case, Halo should be discussed since it supports Windows 98, a retro OS. THat also goes for the first CoD.

So all PC games are retro because the x86 PC platform is from 1983? kek.

>> No.6583203

>>6583190
Yes, but Halo PC has support for Windows 98. This is why it's arbitrary to allow a late 2000 game that has support Windows ME.

No, you can't. Name the exact motherboard, RAM, CPU, and video card you would use. You can't.

>It came out on Xbox originally
>Xbox is not retro
"okay that makes sense"

1. If a game was released on a console and then later released on Windows as a port, the console age takes priority. Regardless of whether you could get Halo to run on DOS or not, it's original release was on the Xbox.

2. The sticky is explicitly clear. Games launched for an OS / platform released in 1999 or earlier are fine. This includes Windows 95, 98, NT, 3.1/3.5/3.51/4.0, etc. Most games around 1999 say that they were released for "Windows" which means that they'll play on those OS's. A game that explicitly states it was released for something like Windows XP, Windows Vista or the like would not be retro. You won't find many of those.

>> No.6583217

>>6583203
Platform refers to hardware not software.
If you update your PS3 to the newest version released in 2020, it doesn't become 8th generation.
The hardware is what platform means.
If you can play the game with 1999 PC hardware it's retro.
Windows has nothing to do with it zoomie.

>> No.6583223

Halo CE for PC is 100% allowed via the rules. The board also frequently discusses remakes, so Halo CE Anniversary for PC is also fair game. The Xbox version and Xbox remake are, however, not retro.

"on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier"
not
"Games launched for an OS / platform released in 1999 or earlier"
Stop deliberately miss-typing information for your own failing argument please.

Okay, so how about Deus Ex. It's a PC game first but came out after 1999 and is sometimes allowed depending on which janny is around.

>> No.6583229

Continued.
This doesn't apply to Halo specifically since Halo is not a PC game, it's an Xbox game.
Xbox is in the 6th generation, it's not retro.
>b-but it was ported-
Doesn't matter. The original game is not retro. Ports of the game are therefore not retro.
Please sperg out more, 6th gen zoomers, it's quite a laugh for us!
