I had one of those for years but the D pad broke after probably around 5 years

I've used this one for about five years since then, great D pad, but the triangle button has gone soft, which really ruins playing fighting games ironically enough and I'm sure the other buttons will at some time soon enough as well. Is there any controller where the contacts won't get fucked and limp or melt away or whatever the hell happens when they lose friction?

Sn30pro+ matte black vers. I love it, I think it's great. Very nice SNES style dpad and buttons with good (if a little cheaper feeling) analogue sticks. The bumpers feel better than an XB1 pad but inferior to the DS4, which is my go for souls games. For me, the big draw is just how versatile it is. Snes style dpad in the neutral position makes it great for emulation and the fact that it can switch between Xinput, Dinput and Switch mode with fucking button combos is unreal. I use the Xinput mode for non-steam games and retroarch and then reboot it into Switch mode for Steam Input for pc games with gyro and shit. I used to use the DS4 for pc games but DS4Windows and Steam Input just kept fucking everything up with Steam commandeering the input outside of the program. It's not the prettiest controller but the feel and build quality are very good for the price. Using it as a 2nd Switch pro controller is nice too.

When I was a kid my parents couldn't afford to get me one for Christmas, and miraculously my mother won one from Taco Bell. They had a promotion running called "score 45 and win". My mom was really depressed at how me and my brother only asked for the one shared gift, and we couldn't afford it, she had a dream that night in which she saw my dead grandfather on the beach and he told her everything was gonna be okay. The next day she stopped at taco bell drive through for a soda after work (something she'd never done before), and peeled off the label on the cup and found out that we won. On Christmas day after me and my brother opened all our gifts, we tried to not let the dissapointment on our faces show because we knew the situation, and while we hadn't gotten what we hoped for, we didn't want it to show. My parents then had us open this one last gift. Me and my bro unwrapped a plastic taco bell cup, (the controller hadn't arrived in the mail yet) and were confused until they said "read it", we did, and we lost our minds with happiness. You always see those contests, and you think nobody ever wins, but they do. Till this day, I still can't believe it happened, and made it the most memorable Christmas of my life. God is good.

Currently use an 8bitdo sn30pro or a PS3 controller for 2d games (like 95% of what I play) and an Xbox 360 controller that has no Xbox branding on it so I assume it's some kind of knockoff for 3d games.

I use a PS2 Dualshock 2

I just bought this off of ebay, straight from Japan. a SCPH-1010, this is the first PS1 controller (from 1994). The fact that it doesn't have analog sticks is immediately noticeable, but this version of the PS1 controller is also noteworthy because it's 10% smaller than the North American version. I'm really anxious to get my hands on it and see how it feels, because I like small controllers.

That's probably prior to steam's new controller config. There are a lot of mid2000 games that would specifically look for the 360 controller and only the 360 controller, but if you run it through steam then you can pretty much just have steam tell the game that whatever you're using is a 360 controller and it'll work. I bought a steam controller some months ago really cheap when Valve was getting rid of their stock.

Pro's:
~INFINITE POSSIBILITIES~
dual haptic touchpads
gyros
lots of buttons that you can map however you like

Con's
steep learning curve
you will have to tinker with it a bunch
Probably very weak for retro console games because it doesn't have a traditional d-pad, however... you might just be a cool enough guy to master playing 2D sidescrollers with touch, analog stick, or even motion controls. While, by default, you "can" click a direction for D-Pad movement, the amount of pressure that you have to press for that *click* is really heavy. I wouldn't dare use the default layout for a 2D sidescroller game, you'd have to get creative.

for the longest time I used pic related.
it was actually pretty good for a pc gamepad, comfortable to use for hours, vibration was good and didn't sound like something was loose inside.
after some years the dpad rubber pads wore off, but I repaired it by taking the metallic domes of a nokia cellphone keypad, so the repaired dpad was clicky like a vita dpad, but required a little more pressure.
after a couple other years the left stick crapped out and had to retired it.
after that I got a sixaxis (yes, the no rumble ps3 controller) from a friend that lent it to me.
I can't remember what I got after I returned the sixaxis, I guess I got nothing until I got a ps3 of my own.
