>amazing game, maybe the best ever
>never had a single decent follow-up game

fucking why

>> No.6574482

It's a good game, but a lot of its identity is a bit obsolete. Wise-cracking roided protagonist is not the staple of action right now, and as impressive it was it to have voiced protagonist after Doom, it becomes grating to hear the same one-liners over and over again.

Duke Nukem just doesn't have an identity worth replicating. The design that once made it groundbreaking is now commonplace. So why have a game called Duke Nukem when you can have something else?

>> No.6574507

tbf it only had one follow up game, that was in development hell and came out really late and bad because of it, and gearbox buying it only hurt it more.

3D Realms put everything on the line with Duke Nukem Forever, and eventually it was too late for Duke to be relevant anymore. I mean relevant in the way that 80s macho action movies were no longer a thing, it was all about tech thrillers and hackers at late 90s and early 00s. Maybe some day Duke Nukem license will find its way to better hands and we'll get that proper Duke revival. Duke is already kind of back as Postal Dude in Postal 4, it's the best we can get for now.

>> No.6576738

>>6576734
their original 1997 date for duke forever was basically as late as something like duke nukem could have been and still been relevant
of course, maybe if it was good enough they could have held that style through into the 2000's, but eh, it became too late pretty fast. it wasn't even big enough to be able to pull off a revival, either
i still haven't even looked at the actual duke forever release, because i know there's no way in hell it could actually hold up

>> No.6576747

>>6576738
I bought Duke Forever at launch balls of steel edition and it was a bitter disappointment. It was great to hear the one-liners in high definition, but everything else was so painfully average. The whole design principle seemed like a big middle finger towards anyone who grew up playing Duke 3D. Some people (journalists) claimed the game flopped because it was outdated, but fans know it flopped because it was too "modern" in the sense that it was playing like a modern military shooter with regenerating health and boring linear levels.

>> No.6576760

>>6576747
exactly as i figured, at that point i just knew it would be like that, why bother when you know with 100% certainty that you're going to be dissapointed?
it's actually pretty hard to resist checking out what became of something you used to love, it often ends in disappointment

I'd argue that DNF wasn't mediocre, it was outright bad. There's glimpses of Duke Nukem 3D in there, but the game is like it's made by someone who looked at DN3D, then completely misunderstood what was good about it. Like, the weapons are mostly like in DN3D, but you're only allowed to carry two of them, and as a result they all play off each other like shit.

>Duke Nukem just doesn't have an identity worth replicating.
Their best bet is to play it off his stiffness and being outdated as part of the character. Like a fit Hank Hill, a middle age guy with old school morals. Keeping to himself, a simple man with simple needs, who enjoys drinking a beer, visit stripclubs, cracking outdated pop culture reference and dad jokes. With a big ego, but with his heart in the right place.

DNF made it look too much like an unlikeable old greasy pervert. It didn't help that the writing had zero direction, and you had him caring about his babes being captured at one minute and making fun of it at the next one.

There's something weirdly addictive about the enemies screams and weapon sound effects in Blood (the shotgun, the lighter). It's the superior build game in terms of pure combat, even with the weird difficulty whiplashes.

However, the character, visual and stage design of Duke 3D was much better, and it remained unmatched for a long time.

Shadow Warrior is ok, just not the best at neither.

I think part of why SW was less memorable is the protagonist. I dont care about how racist it is or isn't, it's just not a particularly funny or relatable character. Duke and Caleb are absurd but they still feel like humans with personalities. Lo Wang is just a joke.

It's like the game had a brand deal, but the brand was Duke Nukem.

>"Look how cool Duke Nukem is! The game is telling you everybody loves him, because the fans of Duke 3D loved him! See? The 3D game had strippers that would flash Duke, and he's like this sex guy, so the game opens with a blowjob because he's that cool and sexy! Oh, man, the game-whole world loves him because we all remember how great Duke Nukem was back in the day, and-and-RRRRRRR, he's super pissed off at the aliens! And he's crude and cool, and he used steroids as a power-up in the 3D game, so now he still do that, and also he can drink beer! And he's so cool that he doesn't have a health meter, he has an EGO meter! C'mon, remember when he was cool?"

The game was trying so hard to huff its own farts that it forgot to be a good game.

Yeah. They released a free DLC on PC to let you carry four weapons, which would be a monumental improvement (even if a needless restriction) but if you bought it on console, go fuck yourself, only two weapons for you.
I found a used PS3 copy for like a dollar, and even knowing I got it for basically free, and I had heard it wasn't good, I was still so fucking furious at how bad the game was. The little glimpses of DN3D that you find in there are just all the more enraging when you know that some of the key people who made that game worked on this one, and they should have known better.
I've never been so fucking bitter over pocket change in my goddamn life, and after all these years, thinking about it still makes me seethe.

At least I will always have Duke Nukem 3D.

>>6577772
Duke was a self-aggrandizing character, sure, that was part of the charm, but the way it's cranked up in DNF is more than all the other games combined, and unlike them, DNF is anti-fun to play.
They had the right to be smarmy about the older games because they were actually good.

The beer pisses me off, because he gets completely drunk off his tits from just one can. It should have been a bottle of whiskey or something, at least then you'd buy that a huge and built guy like him would get blurred and wobbly vision.
