Let's have a pinball thread, it's been so long since the last one!

What have you guys been playing since the lockdown ended?

I caved in this week and went full normie-tier: I bought an Addams Family.

I think it's a perfectly fine game to have for especially multi-game collections. Pinball is a social game even though COVID complicates things a bit, and there's really no better game to teach people how to play pinball than Addams Family
How much did it end up costing you? I haven't been following the TAF market

I've been playing Addams Family for years, and this year it surprises me with a shoutout I have never heard before, this happen to anyone with any pinball that they've played the shit out of?
Maybe it's the Gold edition that has the extra shoutouts not heard on the original. Making them a little rarer. I couldn't find a full list of the shoutouts, the one on wikipedia is incomplete, not having the "GOOD THINKING!" on there.

>> No.6568691

The new stranger things update makes the jump-ramp/projector screen go up and down in one of the multiballs. So you have to time your shot, like in miniature golf. I like that. It's bold.

>>6568445
I understand the sentiment driving the design of TNA; I'd like to see more simpler and older-style games at arcades because they're a lot more fun to play in short bursts and with friends. They're a nice change of pace when you consider that there is very little difference between playing most modern games anymore, but TNA is almost too simple as to have no real flavor of its own. You're shooting locks for almost the entire game unless you have one or two targets left to destroy the reactor because you're just losing your ball otherwise. Half of the playfield is a dumb mini flipper with a bunch of slingshots. Nothing is really fun to shoot at.

Come to think, the most hyperbolic praise I've seen heaped on TNA came from people who pre-ordered it. Regular players and people who bought it knowing what they're in for usually don't try to sell it like the best thing since sliced bread.

>>6572257
Mini playfields are consistently my favorite features in games because of the interesting shots they allow for and ball control they necessitate. 4-flipper games like Grand Lizard, Big Guns, and especially Blackwater 100 I wish there were more of. A more recent example of a game with an excellent mini playfield would definitely have to be Pirates of the Caribbean. TNA's is just wholly uninteresting because the ball bounces around so wildly and so randomly that it isn't interesting, and it takes up so much of the playfield.

>>6572518

Honestly (unfortunately) you don't get to be too choosy when you're first starting out because you're really limited by what's available. It helps to familiarize yourself with a lot of machines so that you know whether or not to pull the trigger when you look on Craigslist or something.
Games from throughout the 80s are generally cheap and can be very well-made, but might not be what you're looking for if you're looking for a machine with a DMD. I'd go for a game made by Bally/Williams after the merger because parts and schematics for these machines are easy to come by, and they're generally quite high-quality.

>> No.6575674

>>6574002
Depends on your price range. The cheapest solid states you can find are generally the late 80s Gottlieb System 80Bs, but the market prices them so low for a reason.

Your best bet is probably a late 70s Bally (or Stern - same board system) SS or one of the cheaper System 11s. If you absolutely must have a DMD game, I personally think some of the Gottlieb System 3 games are underrated and can usually be had for under two grand. The first DMD pin I owned was a Street Fighter II - paid something like 1400$ for it and I found it to be a fun shooter.

What's everyone's thoughts on the updated "realistic" physics on the Williams tables in Pinball FX3?

I personally.... fucking HATE them. It's far too fucking fast. Apparently they got a physicist to help them with the shit but God damn it's impossible to control. The shit bounces around like no table I've ever played IRL. And people online praise it. It's crazy. I get an average of about 7 seconds ball times before draining. I unironically liked Pinball Arcades kinda shitty slow physics to whatever the fuck this ADHD shit is. Wish I could use the old physics on the real licensed tables.

You're right. I didn't know this. Thanks. Just gave it a good play sold bunch of games on both and yeah, it's so much better. Appreciate it.

I honestly don't know what they were thinking with these new physics. They're fucking trash. The ball is totally out of control, builds ridiculous levels of velocity, incredibly difficult to aim, bounces around like it's covered in flubber and does shit I've never seen a real table ever do in my life. Even something as absolutely basic standard as a deadlip to the other flipper is completely fucked.

Zen original "bad" physics: ball fallng down, let the ball drop onto dead flipper, bounces over, cradle it to a stop. Simple. Pinball 101 move.

"Ultra realistic" "improved" physics:
ball falling down, let the ball drop onto dead flipper, ball rockets across to other side, flies up the fucking outlane, rockets across to the other side and drains. What the fuck.

Not even hyperbole here but I honestly think the new physics are unplayable. The improved flipper physics are great though. I'll give them that. But the ball? Fuck that shit.
