I'm trying to get into shooters. Gradius Gaiden is my favorite so far. What do you guys recommend? Like really essential stuff, and which versions are the best? Also none of the wacky stuff like Parodius; I like space and alien planets and sci fi themed ones the most, but historical seems interesting too.

Border Down, the best shoot em right of all time. It lets you have Dragonball Z laser battles with bosses and gives you lots of points for it to boot

I also keep trying to get into R Type with Final and Delta because they look cool as hell, but they kick my ass

Essential for a new player trying out the genre, or essential for a veteran?

No, you opinion is shit. Already horribly dated 3D graphics, niche gameplay-system, inconsistent difficulty. The only saving grave is the soundtrack and even that doesn't reach the greats of the genre.

>niche gameplay-system
The fuck does this mean? Can you elaborate?
>inconsistent difficulty
Meaning what? The game has multiple routes and a rank system which you can directly control via suicides that don't cost you lives, you're more or less in charge of the difficulty curve. It becomes inconsistent when scoring because of some disproportionate boss milks but that's hardly an exclusive problem, or even a big problem. Would you rather have the stage 3 milk followed by an even more brutal boss near the end of the game so your runs get even MORE inconsistent?

I love all kinds of shmups. Console shmups, arcade shmups, classic 80s stuff like Galaga... it's nice to just turn on a game and start blasting sometimes, and this is coming from a JRPG fan. As for essential recommendations, you can't go wrong with the Gradius series or anything by Psikyo or Toaplan.

I'm trying to get more into the genre recently and have noticed that I tend to prefer vertical shooters over horizontal ones. Anyone with a lot of genre knowledge have anything to say about the design philosophies at work in both types? I can't quite place my finger on why I prefer vertical yet.

>> No.6575132

>>6574929
Depends on what kind of verticals vs horizontals you've been playing. Generally speaking, the vertical screen orientation makes bullet reading feel more natural. Besides that there are other design differences like an absence of terrain letting you focus on moving and shooting, enemies mostly coming from 1 direction, and more. If you're playing modern verticals they will be easier to get into because the smaller hitboxes and slower bullets will make flailing more effective and make the games feel more consistent in their challenge. In horis you have to start memorizing levels very early, and there are a lot of fast, sudden attacks which are hard to react to the first time you see them. Though the latter apllies to old verticals too.
